A RiverMade Quality Upgrade: Why we’ve switched to Kiln-Dried Cedar. 🌲🔥

​At RiverMade, I’m always looking for ways to make our mud kitchens and sandboxes even better. With the volume of orders coming in, I’ve made a big shift in how we handle our lumber: every build is now made with professionally kiln-dried cedar.

​Why does this matter?

Naturally drying wood takes a long time, and in our BC climate, it can be inconsistent. By paying to have our wood kiln-dried, we ensure the moisture level is perfect. This means your kitchen is even more stable, more durable, and less likely to warp or crack over time.

​To keep up with these better materials and the rising costs of running the shop (and the delivery van!), you’ll notice a small price adjustment on our 4ft and 6ft kitchens, as well as our 6.5ft sandboxes.

Fresh off the workbench and catching some sun! ☀️🪵

​Another custom 3-sink setup is officially finished and ready for its new home! I had to snap a quick photo while loading it up this morning—the natural grain on this cedar looks absolutely incredible in the sunlight.

​From the extra prep space to the custom shelving, this heavy-duty build is ready for all the mud pies, potion-making, and outdoor play they can throw at it.

​Loaded up the van and headed out to Ladner this morning for a very special delivery. This fully loaded, 3-sink mud kitchen went to a fantastic recurring client!

​Handcrafted from true dimensional cedar back in the Maple Ridge shop, this station is sanded smooth, sealed, and ready for years of muddy outdoor play. I absolutely love how the natural wood grain stands out against that classic white building.

​Whether you need a single-sink setup for a small backyard or a massive 3-sink station for a busy group of kids, we build it to last.

See the difference? 🪵

​When I started RiverMade, my main goal was to build outdoor play gear that actually lasts. That meant making a very important choice early on: ditching the standard store-bought lumber for true dimensional cedar.

​Just look at these photos! Both of these pieces are technically considered 1x4 boards. On the left is your typical hardware store 1x4 (which is actually milled down much thinner). On the right is the true dimensional 1x4 cedar we use for all our builds. As you can see in the second photo, it practically takes two standard store-bought boards to equal the thickness of just one of ours!

​Why does this matter to you?
It means your mud kitchens and sandboxes are heavy-duty. They won't easily warp, crack, or fall apart after one rainy BC winter. They are built for enthusiastic, rough play and designed to last your family for years.

​It takes a little more effort to source and build this way, but as a dad of three, I know the durability is 100% worth it. 🌲✨

Magic in the making! ✨🧪🌿

​I just wrapped up this custom build and had it picked up! A family reached out wanting something extra special for their daughter’s birthday—they didn't just want a mud kitchen, they wanted a dedicated "Potion Station."

​To make it perfect for backyard experiments, we customized the design to feature a single stainless sink with an extra-long, beautifully finished cedar prep counter. We also added custom shelving, hanging utensils, and a whiteboard so she can write down all her secret recipes!

​It’s always an honor when RiverMade gets to be a part of a birthday surprise. 🎁

Batch Mode: ON! 🌲🔧🔨

​There is nothing quite like looking out at a driveway full of fresh cedar dust. I’m just about to wrap up this bulk order of four RiverMade mud kitchen frames.
Batch days like this take a ton of hustle, but seeing them all lined up makes the overtime worth it.
​What’s Left? These frames have all been built and sanded smooth, and all sealed up, but the fun part is next! This evening, I’ll be installing the triple stainless sinks, adding the rotating k***s, burners, and getting the accessory hooks finalized for delivery.

​Had a great time dropping off two of our massive 6ft Mud Kitchens to the wonderful team at Blossoms and Roots in White Rock today!

​When building for daycares and schools, durability is everything. These heavy-duty kitchens are built with true dimensional cedar and fully sealed with Minwax Helmsman Spar Urethane to withstand daily, high-traffic play and the West Coast weather.

​As a father of three, I know exactly how busy life gets, and I know there’s no better way to simplify things than getting the kids excited to play outside. I build these pieces to be durable, fun, and capable of keeping little hands busy for hours.
