When you are camping at Neys, you are in bear country!

Here are a few ways you can be during your stay:

🍳 Keep all wildlife attractants locked in your vehicle or camper when you are not using them—this includes food and non-food items like bug spray, sunscreen, soaps, toothpaste, dirty dishes or anything else with a scent.

🐻If you see a bear, stay at a safe and respectful distance. We are guests in their home, and it's important to give them their space so they can safely leave the encounter.

👀If you do see a bear in the park, let park staff know as soon as possible.

🏕️By staying bear wise, we can keep camping at Neys a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors, human and animals alike.

❓If you have any more questions about camping in bear country, please visit the Gatehouse or attend the Bear Necessities program led by Discovery weekly.

Guess what…Neys has ARUs!

🌿Introducing our ecological showcase series! Throughout the year, we will be showcasing the wonderful ecological monitoring projects that are happening right here at Neys. Starting today and carrying throughout the summer, you’ll get a behind the scenes look at some of the incredible staff led monitoring work that helps us get to know Neys more.

🥾Before Neys opened its gate this season, park Discovery Staff and members from the Northwest Zone Ecology Team headed out into Neys’ backcountry to set up autonomous recording units (ARUs). What is an ARU, you might ask? An ARU is a small device (around the size of a standard pocketbook) that captures the sounds of the world around it over long periods of time. The sounds we are looking to capture are the songs and calls of one of our most numerous groups of campers: birds!

🏕️Just like us human campers every breeding bird looks for different features in their campsites, and fortunately, Neys has many habitats that act as perfect campgrounds for our forest friends. From some wetland spruce, to dry footed pines, there are an array of sites to choose from.

🎵Each of the five ARUs installed will record the campfire conversations of a community that returns to a preferred shared habitat that they thrive in. Although campers book sites at Neys into the Fall, the camping season for the bird community is short. Many of these winged visitors have made long journeys to get here and have equally long journeys to return to somewhere warmer for winter. These ARUs will record the symphony of songs during the spring and summer breeding season.

🪺In a park this big, it would be impossible to see all the breeding and migratory birds that call Neys home. These ARUs will capture an audio snapshot of the bird diversity at Neys. Nearly 400 bird species rely on the Boreal Region in North America for nesting and migratory habitat, and many of them find their summer homes at Neys.

🐦‍⬛Stay tuned until later in the season where we will highlight our most frequent campers and their ‘unsung’ impacts on our park!
