We know what you are thinking…. is it Worth The Fine?

Littering and illegal dumping affect us all. It is disrespectful, harmful to the environment, and unsanitary. Beyond damaging our surroundings, these actions lead to costly cleanups that are funded by taxpayers.

Have you heard the news? We have once again earned an A- rating in the C.D. Howe Institute's annual 2025 report!

This achievement places us in the top six and 85th percentile of 39 major Canadian municipalities that were included in the report. The evaluation focuses on transparency, accountability and municipal budgeting as it relates to how well it helps Mayor and Council make decisions, as well as overall public understanding.

The safety of the community remains the City of Markham’s top priority. In response to recent coyote incidents around the area of McCowan Rd. and 16th Ave., the City has been working closely in consultation with partners and experts including York Regional Police (YRP), Coyote Watch Canada, Shades of Hope, and the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR).

The Animal Services team continues to actively patrol and monitor the area.

If you see a coyote, do not approach it, feed it, or attempt to interact with the animal. Residents are reminded to remain vigilant, especially during early morning and evening hours:

✅Keep a safe distance from wildlife
✅Supervise children at all times
✅Keep pets on a short leash
✅Be aware of posted signage and follow all guidance in affected areas
✅Do not walk in locations where coyotes may be present, and avoid isolated or woody areas, where visibility may be limited

Any coyote sightings or concerning behaviour should be reported immediately to YRP at 9-1-1.
