Participation House, Markham was born of an enthusiastic group of parents, who founded the Cerebral Palsy Parent Council of Toronto in 1947. This organization of family, friends and supporters awakened public awareness of Cerebral Palsy.
This public awareness was a springboard for the vision of care and quality of life the Council had for adults with disabilities. The Council’s residential pilot project, Participation House, Markham opened its doors at Butternut Lane to its first group of residents in November 1972.
Participation House, Markham and the Council’s vision inspired the development of new services and locations. New community projects were developed: St. Luke’s Lodge in 1989, Cedarcrest Manor and Henderson Group Home (now named Frances DiCarlo House) in 1992, Hagerman Corners in 1998, Farintosh Group Home in 2008 and Tony Wong Place in 2010. New programs were developed to help adults with disabilities reach their potential and enjoy the best quality of life possible, including literacy and education programs, pool therapy, and functional physical exercise classes. A fleet of white vans with the distinctive sunshine logo now connects residents to their community for appointments and social participation.
Participation House, Markham now employs 180 staff and serves more than 100 adults with a variety of physical and developmental disabilities, in the spirit of caring first envisioned by the Cerebral Palsy Parent Council of Toronto. The organization continues to grow and innovate with the support of its family, friends and community.
