🐻 BEAR SIGHTING ALERT & SAFETY TIPS 🐻

A bear has been spotted in the Ponemah area. While these animals typically avoid people, it's a good reminder for us all to be Bear Smart to keep both our neighbors and the wildlife safe.

If you see a bear in your yard or neighborhood:

Do not approach or corner it. Give the bear a clear escape route so it can leave peacefully.

Stay calm and move slowly. Back away without turning your back or making direct eye contact.

Do NOT run. Running can trigger a predatory instinct to chase.
Bring children and pets inside immediately. Always check your yard before letting pets out.

Make noise from a safe distance. Shout or bang pots to encourage the bear to move along.

Help prevent bears from sticking around:

Secure your trash. Put garbage out only on the morning of collection, not the night before.

Remove attractants. Take down bird feeders and clean BBQ grills after every use.

Keep pet food indoors. Never leave food out where wildlife can get to it.

This week, in rural Manitoba, including the Village of Dunnottar, official census workers (called Enumerators) will be visiting neighbourhoods.

🔹 They will come to your door with proper government issued identification
🔹 They will provide a handout explaining how to complete your census online
🔹 They will not ask to enter your home

Why does completing the census matter?

Completing the census is important because it helps shape decisions that directly affect our community:

• Fair representation: Census results are used to update federal election boundaries and determine how many representatives we have in the House of Commons.
• Community services: Census data helps governments plan where services are needed, such as daycare centres, schools, hospitals, police stations, senior housing, and other community facilities.
• Funding for Manitoba: Census numbers help calculate federal funding for health care, post secondary education, early childhood programs, housing, pensions, and employment supports.
• Support for local businesses: Businesses use census information to better understand the languages, skills, and needs of people in the community, helping them decide what services or products to offer locally.
• Better planning and research: Census information helps researchers and planners understand trends related to population, education, employment, culture, and health, leading to better long term decisions.

By completing the census, you are helping ensure the Village of Dunnottar receives fair representation, appropriate services, and essential funding— both now and in the future
