Fire Safety is important all year round, but especially during these dry and hot summer months of the fire season here in British Columbia. With temperatures increasing around the province we want to ensure you and your community members are staying safe. Drinking plenty of water before you feel thirsty, as well as checking in on children and elders to ensure everyone stays hydrated is an important step to managing heat related emergencies. Cool your house by closing windows, shutting curtains and blinds, and opening windows at night if you can to let in cool air. Do not leave pets outside for long periods of time, as well provide fresh water constantly as pets overheat quickly. Please find further summer safety tips below, as well attached to this email is a โLightning Safetyโ Tip Sheet to share with community members.

ง Make sure your gas grill is working properly. Check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it for the first time each year. If the flame goes out, turn the grill and gas off and wait at least 5 minutes before re-lighting it.
๐
ง Never leave equipment unattended- For campfires, fire pits, and chimineas, always have a hose, bucket of water, or shovel and dirt or sand nearby, and make sure the fire is completely out before going to sleep or leaving the area.
๐
ง Keep equipment a safe distance from things that can burn- Place your grill well away (at least 3 feet) from anything that can burn, including deck railings and overhanging branches; also keep them out from under eaves.
๐
ง Use fuel and fire starters properly- Never use gasoline or other flammable or combustible liquids on firepits, chimineas, or campfires.
๐
ง If a fire breaks out, call the fire department- For any type of outdoor fire that canโt be quickly and effectively extinguished, call the fire department immediately for assistance.
