Small businesses don't just create businesses. They create jobs.

Labour Day began as a movement focused on workers and better working conditions. Today, it's also an opportunity to recognize the people who create places for others to work.

Across rural communities, entrepreneurs are hiring neighbours, training young people, creating first jobs, building careers and keeping more employment close to home.

Sometimes a single small business can make a very big difference in a small community.

That's one of the reasons Community Futures believes so strongly in supporting entrepreneurs.

A piece of equipment comes up for sale at a great price.

A commercial space becomes available.

A customer asks if you can take on twice as much work.

Sometimes the best opportunities don't arrive when you have extra cash sitting in the bank.

That's when financing can be a tool — giving your business the ability to act on an opportunity that makes sense.

Don't automatically say no because you don't have the cash today. Let's run the numbers.

You’re 24. You have the skills. You just don’t have $15,000 sitting in the bank.

You know how to build.

Fix.

Install.

Haul.

Repair.

The work is available, but starting your own business means buying tools, equipment, safety gear, insurance and everything else you need to actually take the first job.

If you’re an Indigenous entrepreneur between 18 and 39, Beaver River’s IYE Micro-Loan Program was designed for people like you who are ready to turn skills into a business.

Up to $25,000 in combined financing may be available, including a mix of loan and non-repayable grant support.

You don't need to have everything to get started. You need a good idea, a workable plan and somewhere to start the conversation.

You’ve been doing hair from home for two years. Now you’re ready for your own space.

You already have clients.

You have your tools.

You know people will book.

But opening a small salon means a damage deposit, renovations, a proper shampoo station, equipment, signage, products and enough working capital to get through those first few months.

If you’re an Indigenous woman between 18 and 70, the IWE Micro-Loan Program may be able to help you take that next step.

Financing can be used for things like equipment, inventory, renovations, marketing and working capital — and the program includes a combination of loan and non-repayable grant funding.

You’ve already proven people want what you offer. Maybe it’s time to build on it.

You know the customers.

You know the suppliers.

You know what works, what doesn't, and what you would do differently.

Then one day, the owner asks:

“Have you ever thought about buying the business?”

You might know how to run it. That doesn't mean you have the money sitting in the bank to buy it.

That's where business financing can come in.

If an opportunity to purchase an existing business is in front of you, bring it to Beaver River Community Futures. We can sit down with you, look at the numbers and talk about what financing options may be available.

Sometimes the next owner is already working there.
