The group page was the first board approved page of the NLPS. Our beautiful Nottawasaga Light house has fallen into a state of despair, and we need your help! This is the original social media page created in 2012 by a mother and son wanting to save this iconic treasure off our Collingwood harbour, designed to raise awareness, share incredible history that surrounds the Island, and it's Keepers, m
ost importantly the group page played an important role to help petition the Nottawasaga to a list of lighthouse that would be protected under the Act. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heritage_Lighthouse_Protection_Act
The Nottawasaga Lighthouse is on that list! The Help Save The Nottawasaga Lighthouse group page later became the "first" board approved page of The NLPS (Nottawasaga Lighthouse Preservation Society, until December 30th 2015. The "Help Save The Nottawasaga Lighthouse group page" was the foundation of the very first steering team to save the light, although still so much work to do, it will remain as part of the history the surrounds the Nottawasaga Lighthouse! We dedicate this wonderful page to the late Jim Kilgour a beloved biology teacher, an extend the dedication to the late Marion Sandell, a friend and historian of the local area. May we carry your torch proud! The NLPS Mission Statement 2016
To ensure that the heritage resources of the Nottawasaga Island Lighthouse are protected through restoration and preservation of the lighthouse & keeper’s residence in a manner that respects their significant and irreplaceable historical legacy, and by encouraging public understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of this marine heritage through the development of visitor activities, facilities and educational services. Ensure that the heritage resources of the Nottawasaga Island Lighthouse and island are protected against further human and environmental degradation. December, 2015,The Nottawasaga Lighthouse Preservation Society (NLPS) received charitable status. This has been a long term goal of the steering committee, created by Krista King from Collingwood, Ontario in 2012. This will allow the NLPS to move forward on several fundraising initiatives in 2016, seek grants, corporate funding, and many more opportunities. The NLPS will continue to work with the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) to acquire ownership of the lighthouse, and historical land, which will allow restoration efforts to commence.
