πŸ”₯ Fire Prevention Week may be over, but this year’s message about safe charging is important 365 days a year…

The photo here shows the aftermath of a fire in a garage involving a cordless drill battery that caught fire while charging on a workbench.

Although the battery was charging on a hard, flat surface, it’s an important reminder that where you charge matters but so does how long you leave your batteries on the chargerπŸ”‹

πŸ”Œ Remove batteries from the charger once they’re fully charged. Don’t leave them sitting on the charger for days until their next use.

We’ve received a LOT of questions, comments and meaningful conversations about the recent fire photos we’ve shared. And that’s exactly what we hoped for!

As we wrap up , we’re sharing three important reminders to help you charge your devices safely πŸ”‹πŸ”Œ

We’ll be sharing a couple more photos over the next few days, so keep the questions and conversations coming!

A charging lawn mower battery quickly turned into a dangerous situation for a local resident πŸ”‹πŸ”₯

The lawn mower battery was charging in the entranceway of the home when it caught fire. With the fire blocking her main exit and no back door, the resident was forced to escape through a window. We’re very glad she made it out, but she was treated for smoke inhalation and minor injuries.

When charging larger batteries for things like lawn equipment, e-bikes or e-scooters:

πŸ”‹ Charge them outside whenever possible.
πŸšͺ Never charge or store batteries near a doorway, hallway, or exit. Always keep your escape routes clear in case you need to get out quickly.

When buying chargers, power banks or other electrical devices, especially online, take a few extra seconds to make sure you’re buying a safe product.

πŸ”Ž Look for a recognized certification mark like CSA, UL or ETL.
πŸ›’ Buy from reputable retailers and manufacturers you know and trust.
⚠️ Be cautious with cheap, off-brand electrical products, especially from third-party sellers.

Certification marks mean the product has been tested to meet recognized safety standards.

Hear sirens behind you? Please move to the RIGHT and stop πŸ›‘

Did you know many City of Medicine Hat traffic lights 🚦 are equipped with an Emergency Vehicle Preemption system?

What is that you ask? When our fire trucks are responding to an emergency with lights and sirens, the system can change upcoming traffic lights to green in our direction of travel, helping us move through intersections more safely and get to the emergency sooner.

But we still need your help!

We’ve noticed many drivers are not pulling over when an emergency vehicle approaches from behind.

🚨 If you see lights or hear sirens coming up behind you, safely move as far to the RIGHT as possible and STOP. Stay stopped until the last emergency vehicle has passed.

The traffic lights 🚦 help clear the intersection and you help clear the lane!

Today marks 25 years since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, a day that forever changed the world and left a lasting impact on the fire service.

For Medicine Hat Fire Marshal, Scott Hanelt, the connection to 9/11 is a personal one.

One year after the attacks, Scott and retired Medicine Hat Platoon Chief Tom Coffey travelled to New York City to attend the memorial ceremonies alongside more than 77,000 firefighters. During their visit, they spent time at New York fire stations, spoke with firefighters who experienced unimaginable loss and visited the area surrounding the World Trade Center site.

At a nearby church, photographs, memorabilia and fire department badges from around the world had been left in tribute. Scott added Medicine Hat Fire Department patches to the collection, a small piece of our department left behind in honour of the firefighters and emergency responders who answered the call that day.

The lessons of September 11 also helped shape the fire service we know today. In the years that followed, emergency services strengthened coordination between fire, police and EMS; expanded hazardous materials and CBRNE preparedness; improved communications, training and protective equipment; and placed greater emphasis on firefighter mental health, occupational cancer prevention and on-scene decontamination.

Twenty-five years later, we remember the 2,977 people who were killed in the attacks, including 343 FDNY firefighters, and the many others whose lives and health were forever changed.

We remember their courage, their sacrifice and their service.

Never forget πŸ™
