Meota and Area Volunteer Fire Department was called to a house fire March 8 at approximately 6:51 pm at Lanz Point, in the RM of Meota.

I want to thank the 15 members that were able to attend.

Rapid response, and two engines, as well as two tankers and multiple utility vehicles attended initially.

We would also like to thank RM of NB who were able to help us with mutual aid, by supplying two more tankers, and 6 members to help switch our members off for air tank exchange, and just physical exhaustion.

We would like to thank the members of the Lanz Point community that alerted us, and when we got there were well on their way to having streets cleared and a clear path to the house so we could get in with out risk of getting stuck, or injury to our members. The residents did a huge part in helping us do our job safely, so Thank You to Geoff, Larry and others that were there in full force.

Wind was a concern, and thankfully it died down shortly after we arrived. Any cabin community is usually tucked in tight with other premises, and usually has lots of trees around us which can always cause us concern. We were able to contain the fire to the original structure, this was partially due to the neighbors efforts in alerting us so quickly, and making way to the premises before we got there.

We were back in service at approximately 12:10 AM March 9. No injuries, and all equipment back in service.

Thank you again to everyone involved in this incident.

Highways north of Cochin are extremely icy right now. They may look wet from rain, but they are very, very slick.

Please slow down, increase your following distance, and travel with extra care. Not worth the risk—get there safe. ❄️🚗

EXTREME COLD TRAVEL SAFETY REMINDER
❄️❄️

If you must travel during extreme cold, please take a few extra minutes to prepare — it can make a huge difference if things go wrong.

Before you go:
✔️ Check highway conditions and weather updates
✔️ Let someone know your route and expected arrival time
✔️ Make sure your phone is fully charged

Have an emergency kit:
🧤 Extra warm clothing, hats, and mitts
🧣 Blankets or sleeping bags
💧 Water and high-energy snacks
🔦 Flashlight and extra batteries
🕯️ Candles & matches (use safely)
🚗 Jumper cables and a tow strap

Vehicle basics:
🔧 Ensure you have enough fuel
🛞 Check tires and fluids
👀 Keep headlights and taillights clear of snow

If you become stranded:
➡️ Stay with your vehicle
➡️ Run the engine periodically for heat
➡️ Make your vehicle visible

Extreme cold doesn’t forgive mistakes. Planning ahead helps keep you, your passengers, and first responders safe.

When in doubt — delay the trip. Staying home is always the safest option.

🚨 HIGHWAY TRAVEL ADVISORY 🚨

All highways leaving anywhere close are currently listed as Travel Not Recommended.

Road conditions are unsafe and worsening, with poor visibility and rapidly changing conditions. Even if roads appear passable in town, highways are a very different situation.

Emergency response is significantly impacted in these conditions. Staying off the roads helps keep you and first responders safe.

👉 Please avoid all non-essential travel. Conditions are expected to deteriorate further.
Thank you for doing your part to keep everyone safe.

MVA just south of Glaslyn. Highway is closed. Please do not travel in that direction for the time being. Obey emergency personal if you are in the area.

It’s another gross night for highway driving!

⚠️ Road Conditions Advisory ⚠️

December 30th,2025 @8:30pm

The highways are extremely icy right now. The freezing rain we just received has made conditions very slick.

If you don’t absolutely need to travel, please consider delaying your trip. If you do have to be on the road, take it slow, increase following distance, and drive with caution.

Your safety ,and the safety of others , comes first. Please plan accordingly and stay safe. ❄️

Last night, on Christmas, I witnessed what it truly means to be a community.

I live in Prince Albert and have spent the majority of my life here. While I am a member of a First Nation that is also my community, this city is home.

If you haven’t seen the local news here, our Salvation Army burned down. Yes, on Christmas, just two hours before it was set to open as a warming shelter, as it does every night. Only hours earlier, it had served a community wide Christmas meal. I had just been inside the day before, helping peel potatoes for the meal yesterday.

These operations are largely run by volunteers. Any disruption is felt immediately, and so is the loss of the quiet, constant work that goes into keeping things running so those in community can access what they deliver. They are the unsung heroes of our communities, and we do not say that out loud often enough.

My husband, who is a city councillor here, got a call and I have never seen someon get in their vehicle so fast. I grabbed my jacket and went with him. Almost immediately, someone from the community, a former elected Chief herself, called everyone she could think of and to bring in reinforcements. No immediate plan other than our community members knew they needed to help right away.

Before we knew it, the city’s stakeholders were gathered, working together to figure out what to do. The Major from the Salvation Army arrived shaken and sad, but already focused on immediate measures. Including finding immediate shelter and food for people who needed it last night.

Prince Albert Grand Council stepped up without hesitation. Grand Chief Brian Hardlotte responded right away to the call from the newly tasked Volunteer Coordinator. The Director of Urban Services opened the downtown urban location immediately. A local Indigenous owned security company owner, Roger also showed up to provide the security for the evening to make sure it could run. No debate, no delays. Everyone knew it was needed.

Mobile Crisis, frontline workers, the Mayor, City administration, everyone who could came together to problem solve. Before anyone went home after midnight, food was already being prepared.

There will be unkind comments, speculation and rumours. That part is easy. What is not easy is keeping these community pillars going day after day. While we cannot always prevent things like this from happening, we can choose to highlight the good and remember what being part of this community is really about.

I love my community. This loss will be felt for a very long time, but the way our home comes together in moments like this is truly inspiring. Prince Albert is sometimes the root of jokes, with our real deadly slang and our geographical location that clearly makes us superior when it comes to location to the lakes (lol). But we are also a strong example of what it looks like when people take care of each other.

Merry Christmas 🎄if you can volunteer, Kim from the YWCA is coordinating. I’ll put her email in the comments.

We would like to congratulate a couple of our local fire fighters. Riley St Amant and Kenyon LaClare went up north this summer to help fight the forest fires.
Both were honoured, and recognized by the Premier for their contributions to the fight! Our Zone 8 rep Kailyn Simon awarded these two with their plaques and medallions at our Christmas appreciation supper.
Thanks guys, we are so happy to have you on our team!!
