Flue fires are no joke. They can be scary, fast, and very hot. The good news is they’re very preventable. Here are some effective tips to help with prevention. 👇

🔥 Burn Smart
- Use dry, seasoned wood only (at least 6–12 months old). Wet or green wood = creosote buildup.
- Avoid burning garbage, cardboard, or treated/painted wood—they create sticky, flammable residue.
- Burn hot, not smoldering. Low, smoky fires cause creosote to build up faster.

🧹 Keep the Chimney Clean
- Have your chimney inspected and cleaned at least once a year by a professional.
- Watch for black, flaky or tar-like buildup—that’s creosote.

🌬️ Manage Airflow
- Open the damper fully before lighting a fire and keep it open while burning.
- Make sure your chimney cap and flue are free of nests, debris, or ice.
- Good airflow = cleaner burn.

🔎 Monitor & Maintain
- Check for cracked flue liners or damaged bricks—these increase fire risk.
- Use a chimney cap with a spark arrestor.

🚨 Be Prepared
- Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors near the fireplace area.
- Keep a chimney fire extinguisher or fire suppressant log on hand.
- If you ever hear a loud roaring sound or see sparks shooting from the chimney—call emergency services immediately.
