🔥 Burning Garbage is Not Permitted – Know Before You Burn 🔥
We are reminding residents that only approved materials may be burned in accordance with the Open Air Burn By-laws. Burning garbage, construction materials (shingles), furniture, plastics, tires, insulation, household waste, or other prohibited materials is not only illegal — it creates serious risks for people, property, and the environment.
🚫 Why is burning garbage dangerous?
• Produces toxic smoke and harmful chemicals that can affect your health and the health of your family, neighbours, and first responders.
• Releases pollutants that contaminate the air, soil, and water.
• Creates excessive smoke that can reduce visibility on roadways and cause complaints from neighbouring properties.
• Increases the risk of uncontrolled fire spread, especially during dry or windy conditions.
• Leaves behind hazardous debris and environmental damage.
💰 Cost Recovery and Fines
If the Fire Department is dispatched to a fire that is found to be in contravention of the West Perth or Perth East Open Air Burn By-law, the property owner may be:
• Invoiced for Fire Department response costs (cost recovery); and
• Subject to fines and enforcement action under the applicable by-law.
Before lighting any outdoor fire, ensure you understand what materials are permitted and that your fire complies with all local regulations.
✅ Burn only approved materials.
✅ Be a good neighbour.
✅ Protect our environment.
✅ Help keep firefighters available for real emergencies.
To obtain an open-air burn permit please call your local office or go online (West Perth only). If you have questions about what can and cannot be burned, please ask to speak with fire department personnel.
