A home in progress.

If you look closely at the centre of these photos, you’ll see something pretty special. A home. 🏠

This outdoor space at our shelter is being created by the very people who are staying here. They have been digging, raking, planting, laying stone and putting their own ideas and hard work into transforming what was once just an empty patch of ground.

And it’s not finished yet.

There’s something incredibly fitting about that.

A home taking shape, built by people who are working toward homes of their own.

Homelessness does not define a person. The people who come through our doors are creative, capable and talented. They want to contribute. They want to belong. They want to take pride in the place around them.

Sometimes progress looks like securing an apartment, getting a job or reconnecting with supports.

And sometimes it looks like a group of people standing outside together, creating something beautiful from the ground up. 🌱

A home in progress, in more ways than one.

We can’t wait to see what they create next. ❤️

Three weeks ago, our community was faced with an unimaginable challenge. More than 46 people suddenly found themselves without a place to call home, and the question on everyone’s mind was, what happens now?

Today, as the Golden Hawk Emergency Shelter closes, Miramichi Housing Solutions is incredibly proud to say that no one will be sleeping on the street because of this closure. Every individual has a safe place to go, with only one person transitioning into our emergency shelter.

This outcome didn’t happen by chance. It happened because an entire community came together.

Miramichi Housing Solutions would like to extend a special thank you to Heidi and Natasha for their extraordinary leadership, compassion, and commitment throughout this emergency response.

For three straight weeks, Heidi was on-site every single day, working long hours to support clients, lead staff, coordinate services, and respond to whatever challenges arose. She was a constant presence during one of the most demanding responses our organization has faced, ensuring people were treated with dignity, respect, and compassion every step of the way.

Natasha became a fierce advocate for some of our community’s most vulnerable individuals. She worked tirelessly behind the scenes to navigate complex situations, advocate with community partners, coordinate supports, and ensure no one was overlooked. Her compassion reached far beyond the expectations of her role.

We would also like to thank our dedicated staff, volunteers, the City of Miramichi, the fire department, the Department of Social Development, HNB, Red Cross, Horizon Health, Mobile Crisis, our community partners, and everyone who stepped forward to help. This response showed what is possible when organizations work together with one shared goal: ensuring people are safe.

MHS could not be prouder of our team. This was one of the largest emergency housing responses our community has seen, and because of the extraordinary collaboration, dedication, and heart shown by so many, dozens of people found safety, support, and hope when they needed it most.

We are incredibly honoured to be featured by the United Way Miramichi Fund as they launch their work in the Miramichi region.

United Way’s impact on our community is immeasurable. By investing in local organizations and ensuring funds raised here stay here, they help create lasting change for individuals and families across the Miramichi region.

We are proud to be one of their community partners and are grateful for the trust they place in our work. Their support helps us continue providing safe housing, wraparound supports, and hope to those who need it most.

A special thank you to Jim for so courageously sharing his story. Your willingness to speak about your journey helps break down stigma, inspires hope, and reminds others that change is possible. Thank you for trusting us to be part of that journey.

Thank you, United Way, for sharing our story and for your continued commitment to strengthening our community. We encourage everyone to follow their new page and learn more about the incredible impact they’re making throughout Miramichi.

Together, we’re building a stronger community. ❤️

Today, we were honoured to welcome the Honourable Cindy Miles, Minister of Social Development, MLA Sam Johnston, Daniel Mills, Deputy Minister of Social Development, and Bronwyn Davies, Assistant Deputy Minister of the Children and Families Division, to Miramichi Housing Solutions.

Although not everyone is pictured, we appreciated the opportunity to showcase our Adult Emergency Shelter, Transitional Housing Program, and Miramichi Youth House. It was an opportunity to share the realities facing individuals, youth, and families in our community, highlight the impact of our dedicated staff, and discuss both the successes we’ve achieved and the work that still lies ahead.

We are grateful for the opportunity to have meaningful conversations about homelessness, housing, youth services, and the importance of investing in community-based supports.

Thank you for taking the time to visit, ask thoughtful questions, and see our work firsthand. We look forward to continuing to work together to strengthen services and create lasting change for the people of New Brunswick.

What an incredible reminder of what community looks like. ❤️

Every paper on this wall represents an accomplishment, an act of kindness, or someone stepping up to help another person. These moments may seem small on their own, but together they tell the story of resilience, growth, and hope.

A huge thank you to both our incredible staff and the amazing residents at the shelter.
Together, you are creating a culture where people are supported, celebrated, and encouraged every single day. This is what happens when everyone works together and believes in one another.

There is so much to be proud of this month, and with more than a week still to go, there is no doubt this wall will continue to fill with even more accomplishments, kindness, and positive moments.

Keep up the amazing work! 💙

July has been an incredible month, and I couldn't be more proud of what we've accomplished together at 273B! ❤️

Every single paper on this wall represents something meaningful—an accomplishment, an act of kindness, or a helping hand extended by one of our amazing guests. Each one tells a story of growth, compassion, resilience, and community.

To see this wall continue to fill up is a reminder of what can happen when people support one another and celebrate even the smallest victories.

And the best part? We still have over a week left in July! I can't wait to see how many more accomplishments, kind gestures, and moments of positivity we'll add before the month is over.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of making 273B such a special place. Let's keep the momentum going! 💙

💙 A huge shout out to the incredible team at Miramichi Housing Solutions Inc.

Over the past few days, our staff have been working around the clock to support individuals and families affected by the sudden closure of an apartment building in our community.

From helping people find emergency shelter and secure housing, to arranging transportation, supporting pets, connecting people with resources, and simply being there to listen during one of the most stressful moments of their lives, our team continues to show up with compassion, professionalism, and empathy.

What many people don’t see is that this response comes while continuing to operate all of our other programs. Our emergency shelter, transitional housing, youth services, specialized placements, outreach, case management, and community supports have all continued without missing a beat.

To our staff: thank you for your long days, late nights, flexibility, and your commitment to treating every person with dignity and respect. You continue to show what compassion in action truly looks like.

The work may often go unseen, but its impact is felt throughout our community. We are incredibly proud of each and every one of you, and it is an honour to work alongside such an exceptional team.

With sincere gratitude,

Jory Geikie
Executive Director

This photo is hard to look at.

But it’s real.

One of the things our new shelter location allows us to do is be more flexible when someone arrives with a pet.

Whenever possible, we work with the guest to create a safety plan for their pet. That may include a temporary foster placement, support from family or friends, or another safe arrangement until they are back on their feet.

Over the years, members of our own team have opened their homes to foster guests’ pets, helped cover veterinary care, had animals spayed or neutered, and cared for them through their recovery so their owners could access shelter / housing without worrying about their companion’s wellbeing.

Sometimes, despite every effort, the safest plan looks like this.

A bed. A dog crate. Food and water bowls.

For many people experiencing homelessness, a pet isn’t just a pet. It’s family. We understand that.

Our team goes above and beyond every day to remove barriers and ensure people are safe.

Sometimes that means thinking outside the box. Sometimes it means finding a foster home. And sometimes it means making room for both a person and their pet.

It may not look perfect, but it looks like compassion. And sometimes, that’s exactly what people need. ❤️🐶

☀️ There is something special about days like today.

The sunshine, the open green space, the peaceful surroundings, and now… our very first pepper growing in the garden. 🌱🫑

Just a few weeks ago, during the United Way Day of Caring, volunteers came together to help improve our property. That day led to something even more meaningful. Through the connections made, a wonderful community member stepped forward and helped us create our very own garden.

What you don’t see in these photos are the people behind them. The folks out tending the garden, mowing the lawn, creating beautiful woodwork, painting, and taking pride in making this property a place people are proud to call home. Every project, no matter how big or small, is helping create a welcoming environment where people feel valued and supported.

Our work has always been housing focused, but we know that housing is about so much more than four walls and a roof. A home should be a place where people can feel safe, find peace, build connections, and begin to heal. Spaces like this help make that possible.

This property is so much more than a bed. It is a place where people can reconnect with nature, learn new skills, share meals, and take pride in caring for something together. It is a place where hope grows right alongside the vegetables in the garden.

Community working together is a wonderful thing. Every volunteer, every donation, every partnership, and every helping hand reminds us that lasting housing solutions are built not only with buildings, but with people who care.

Thank you to everyone who has helped make this space what it is today. Together, we’re growing so much more than a garden. We’re growing community, dignity, and hope. 💚🌿

Farm Day 🐐

A Huge Thank You to Our Team Member, Bobby!

Today, Bobby generously brought his farm animals, along with his beautiful German Shepherd, Molly, to our Adult Shelter and Transitional House at 273 King George for our residents to enjoy.

Spending time with animals offers so many benefits. Whether it’s petting a sheep, cuddling a rabbit, meeting a friendly goat, or spending time with Molly, these interactions can help reduce stress, improve mood, encourage conversation, and provide comfort. Animal assisted experiences create meaningful moments of connection and can have a positive impact on overall well being.

Thank you, Bobby, for sharing your animals, your time, and your kindness with our residents. Your generosity helped create an afternoon filled with smiles, laughter, and memorable moments that everyone will cherish.
