Abbreviated History of the Point:

William Davidson was the first permanent English speaking settler on the Miramichi River. He obtained a large land grant from the Province of NS(NB was not a separate province at the time) in 1765. In the 25 years between 1765 and 1790, the Miramichi Valley changed from a forest wilderness to an organized community with scattered settlements along both sides of the river, much of it due to the persistence and ability of William Davidson, a Scotsman. He was a pioneer in the fish, lumber, and shipbuilding industries no only in Miramichi and was successful in establishing overseas markets for Miramichi products. Davidson ( nee John Godsman) from Banffshire, Scotland was accompanied to this area by his business partner, John Cort from Aberdeenshire. They were responsible for establishing many settlers from Scotland in the Miramichi. Following their expulsion from NS, the Acadians took refuge in this area during the 1756-1759 period. A cairn commemorating their history was erected nearby in August 2006. Many of the earliest settlers along the Miramichi are buried at Wilsons Point but there were only 17 identifiable tombstones here when Lord Beaverbrook began a restoration on the site in 1947. At that time the original stones were clean but over the years the writing on them has become almost unreadable, so new markers were purchased by the Scottish Heritage Association. Each marker contains the original inscription where possible. Many of the original graves were enclosed by fences as indicated on the cemetery entrance sign. Lord Beaverbrook was referring to these when he called the park "The Enclosure" in the late 1940s. The first Protestant church in Miramichi area was built at Wilsons Point. James Anderson was the designer and builder of Saint James Church in 1791. He was a Scotsman, brought to the Miramichi by William Davidson. This is the actual site of that church, the cornerstones having been located by archaeologists in 2003. It was similar in size and design to the new interpretive center but we have been unable to locate a picture of the original building. There were a number of traveling clergymen to the Miramichi area in the late 1700s but it was not until 1802 that a Presbyterian minister took up residence in Miramichi. He preached at both Wilsons Point and Moorfields from 1802 until 1814, and is buried in Moorfields cemetery in Millbank. The Point had been know by various names but after 1820 it was know as Wilsons Point. It was named for a Scotsman from Stromness, Orkney, Scotland, John Wilson. He and his wife, Euphemia Clouston arrive in the Miramichi about 1817 and settled at the Point. John Wilson was known as the ferryman from the Point. He operated his ferry from Wilsons Point to both sides of the river and to Beaubear's Island. In 1856 the North West Bridge was opened. The services of the ferryman were less frequently required, so John Wilson retired from his ferryman business to become a farmer. The Point is still know as Wilsons Point.

It’s Friday which means tonight is the first of our haunted events.

Haunted Tales in the Cemetery with Storyteller Calum Lykan takes place tonight with two tour times available; 630pm and 8 pm.

Tickets can be purchased in the little church when you arrive. Please come at least 10 mins before departure times. If you are late for the first session you will have to wait until the second.

Dress warm, bring a lawn chair and flash light if you’d like as each session will last between 45-60mins.

We’ll have hot chocolate available in the church to take with you. It’s complimentary.

Tickets are $15/person please use parental discretion. There are no jump scares but it’s pretty creepy in the darkness of a 250 year old graveyard and you never know what or who is lurking in the shadows.

Use caution when parking and if you need to park along the road please go to the right side as you come into the site.

As for today, we’ll be tucked up in the little church for our second to last day of the season but will be closing early so we can return for tonight’s event.

We still have a bit of coffee and tea left and a great variety of candy and fudge all buy one get one free.

One week from today join us inside the little church for an evening of gruesome and grizzly tales from the streets of Edinburgh and the surrounding country side as famed storyteller Calum Lykan draws you in to the backdrop of his beloved home land and takes your imagination on a sinister journey that will have you wishing your mommy was near by to keep you safe.

Actually it’s not as scary as that but you may feel the cold clammy fog of Scotland tickle your neck and smell the dark dank tombs and catacombs of ancient Scotland.

Tickets are by reservation, seats are limited. Call or email for more information. We’ll have light refreshments to offer and a surrogate mommy if you need her.

Join us for the last Piper and the Point and Walk with a Scot tomorrow beginning at with Calum for tales and David will start the tunes at 2pm. Coffee will be on in the little church.

As for today, we are planning a late start. We’re aiming to open at 11am, but will reassess depending on the weather.

Sales in the gift shop continue, there’s lots of tasty bites still available.

Hope to see you soon! 😊

Here we are facing another weekend and it’s our last full one if the season.

Looks like it’s a mixed bag weather wise but there maybe a few sunny moments to capture some family and grad photos.

Gift shop sales continue and not only do we have a fine group of Scottish students coming to visit today, we also have two fine Scotsmen making their last appearance under the pines on Sunday for this season.

Join Piper David and our weaver of stories Calum for Piper at the Point and Walk with a Scot on Sunday afternoon. We’ll have coffee on in the church.

Today we’ll be tucked up toasty inside waiting on visitors, hope you’re amongst them.

See you soon! 😊

Don’t let a little rain deter you from taking a walk under the pines. There’s still a bit of colour left to admire and it’s always cozy inside the little church. 🍁🍂🍁

Don’t forget about the buy one get one half price sale on coffee, tea and candy. We still have a decent variety to chose from. ☕️🫖🍭🍬

Our queen bee Marls captured some of the magic of the Great Miramichi Haggis Hunt and Fall Fair before the masses descended on Saturday. As she always says it was glorious! Enjoy! 💕

We’ll be waiting for you, see you soon! 😊
