FVMC Meeting April 9, 2026

Our monthly meeting took place at President Dave Watters home.

This is always a fun night as it is the time to exchange our magic purchases from the annual FVMC auction.

Thanks to Gord Boyes for managing the auction site and sending out all the sold reports to each of the sellers. There were over 200 items up for grabs and we had bidders from as far away as Calgary and Edmonton. Thanks to Chris Yuill and Gord for arranging the delivery of the magic items to our out-of-province buyers.

The meeting started a little late due to the auction activities, so Dave skipped the business portion and went straight to the announcements.

A quick review of the ticket sales for the upcoming Eric Samuels FVMC Lecture - May 3rd and show in May are off to a slow start. We are encouraging all the members to spread the word to their family and friends and on social media.

The other item Dave mentioned was Lon Mandrake’s Celebration of Life to be held at Science World this Friday April 17th at 7pm. Chris Yuill will M/C and Cathie Watters will be organizing the food. Cathie has asked for a few more volunteers to help with the food set up at the venue.

The meeting then shifted towards the workshop portion featuring elastic band magic.

Chris Yuill, Dave Watters, Rob Teszka, Ray Wong, and Rick Mearns, demonstrated and then taught their tricks.

At 8pm the meeting took a break for dinner. Cathie Watters served up an absolutely delicious assortment of very tasty treats from her homemade chicken pot pies to the pulled pork sandwiches, it was enjoyed by all. Thank you Cathie!

We resumed the meeting with the always fun and interesting Bomb’s Away competition.

This competition usually involves members performing tricks they just won at the auction. No practice, just performance of the trick, and we vote on the funniest, best performance, or who bombed!

Due to the fact we only had one entry from an auction won trick, two others were allowed to compete.

First up was Glen Labarre with a 2-deck card trick, then Rob Teszka with a mind reading card trick, and last was Rick Mearns with his version of Out of this World.

After all the votes were counted, the winner of this year’s Bomb’s Away trophy was…Rick Mearns! Congratulations Rick!

The meeting wound down after a little more socializing. We had 13 members, and 4 guests.

March Madness at FVMC Ends in a 💩 Show 👀🤷‍♂️😃

Our March 12 Fraser Valley Magic Company meeting had everything: magic, mayhem… and eventually… poo on a stick.

The night kicked off with some exciting news — Eric Samuels will be performing and lecturing at the Abbotsford Curling Club on May 2, 2026! If you love great magic (and you clearly do), grab tickets at www.MagicShowTickets.ca.

Next up was a rope magic workshop where members shared some clever thinking.
Chris Yuill talked about making Professor’s Nightmare look more natural, while Rick Mearns and Gary Savard showed off their ring and rope variations. Gord Boyes proved that even a skipping rope can be magical, and Dave Watters wrapped things up with an explanation of Grandma’s Miracle Necklace.

But the real chaos began with the legendary…

💩 POO-ON-A-STICK COMPETITION 💩

This year’s challenge: perform magic with rhyming patter.

Glen Labarre, Bruce Hunt, and Chris Yuill traded magical blows…

All while speaking cleverly in rhyme and prose.

Cards appeared, rings flew, the audience laughed a bit…

But in the end, Glen’s ring routine was the hit!

He took the win, the glory, and the bragging stick…

Complete with a trophy topped in… well… 💩

Our next meeting is April 9 at Dave & Cathie Watters’ house, featuring a Bombs Away 💣 competition and the pickup for your auction winnings.

Dear FVMC members, and the whole magic community.

We received this from Chris Yuill today.

“It is with deep sorrow that I announce the sudden passing of our friend, compeer, and magic family member Lon Mandrake over this past weekend on Sunday around Midnight.

He passed quietly in his sleep with Linda by his side. The family is going through their grieving process.

I know members will have many inquiries about this devastating news. As soon as we hear more information, I will share it with all members. I spoke with Linda and she said there will be a celebration of life in March or April.

Lon was a great mentor, and close friend to all of us.

He was S.A.M. 95.

We will all miss him dearly.”

We are devastated by this news.

Lon was an ambassador for the entire magic community. He was a member of both FVMC and the VMC - and attended almost every convention, lecture and function.

We all knew and loved him.

He was magic.

Our thoughts and hearts are with Linda and the family 💔

What a great meeting tonight!

Congrats to Dave Watters who will be filling the remainder of term as President for 2026!

And to Mike Norden who was appointed 1st VP to fill Dave’s vacant position!

We mapped out our 2026 schedule -

We had 8 competitors for the Steve Dickson Trophy for Close Up Magic and the winner was … Vitality! Congrats to all who competed!

Amazing food was provided by Nicole Norden😋

The white elephant gift exchange was a fun highlight of the night and many good / and bad gifts were traded about!

We also took a tour of the Magish Inn - as it’s rare it’s not booked! It’s like an museum of magical history so it was enjoyed by the attendees.

We had 18 members tonight and we hope to see you all next month!
