National AccessAbility Week takes place from May 31 to June 6, with this year’s theme: “Building a Strong, Accessible Canada”

Accessibility is often thought of as ramps, elevators, door buttons, or reserved parking spaces — but true accessibility goes far beyond physical spaces.

It’s about belonging.
It’s about dignity.
It’s about whether people feel welcomed, included, heard, and valued in their communities.

For many able-bodied individuals, accessibility is something we may only notice when it is inconvenient to us — a longer automatic door, a reserved seating area, a quieter sensory-friendly space. But for others, accessibility is the difference between participating and being excluded entirely.

National AccessAbility Week invites all of us to pause and reflect:
• Who is missing from our workplaces, events, schools, and conversations?
• What barriers exist that we may never personally experience?
• Are we designing communities that simply accommodate people — or truly include them?

Sometimes making a difference starts with small actions:
👂Listening more thoughtfully.
🗨️Using inclusive language.
🤝Creating space at the table.
💡Challenging assumptions.
💙Recognizing ability before disability.

At Mission Association for Community Living, we believe accessibility is not about “helping others” — it is about building communities where everyone has the opportunity to participate, contribute, connect, and thrive.

An accessible Canada is a stronger Canada — for everyone. 💙

🌱 There’s something special about getting your hands in the soil and working together to help something grow. 🌻

Individuals from our Maple Day Program recently spent time preparing their new gardening space for flowers, bringing teamwork, laughter, and plenty of community spirit along the way. Gardening can be incredibly therapeutic — offering a chance to slow down, connect with nature, build friendships, and take pride in creating something beautiful together.

We can’t wait to see this space bloom over the coming weeks! 🌼🌿💚🫶

..and you've got big shoes to fill! 👢👞

Our superstar Admin Assistant is leaving us to go back to school, and we are so sad to see her go 😭

About us: We’re a small but mighty team 💪 with big hearts ❤️, busy calendars 📅, and a shared sense of purpose 🫶🌎.

• Enjoys working as part of a team

The role: Full-time. Monday to Friday 8:30am - 5pm (40hrs/week) $28.00/hour to start.

🌼 May is Child Care Month — Thank You to Our Incredible Caregivers

Throughout May, we celebrate Child Care Month in BC, and on May 8 — Child Care Provider Appreciation Day, we take a special moment to recognize the incredible educators, caregivers, and support staff at MACL’s Kaleidoscope Childcare and at the dedicated childcare providers and centres throughout the City of Mission and across British Columbia.

Every day, you create safe, nurturing spaces where children feel supported, included, and encouraged to grow. Whether in classrooms, childcare settings, or alongside families in the community, your patience, creativity, and compassion help build strong foundations for learning, confidence, and belonging.

Your work makes a lasting difference — not just for the children you support, but for their families and our entire community.

Thank you for the care, heart, and expertise you bring to your work each day. We appreciate you — this month and every month. 💛

We also want to recognize the important work of Supported Child Development Consultants, who help make inclusion meaningful and successful for children with extra support needs. Through collaboration, encouragement, coaching, advocacy, and individualized support strategies, they help children participate fully in childcare and community life while supporting families and childcare teams along the way.

And to the parents and caregivers who partner with us every day - thank you for the love, advocacy, and support you provide to your children. We are proud to be part of your village.

At MACL, our L.I.F.E, Supported Living Services, and Employment Services programs support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to build the skills, confidence, and connections needed to live full and independent lives.

Whether it’s learning daily living skills, finding meaningful employment, or strengthening independence at home and in the community, these programs help create opportunities for growth, belonging, and personal success.

Because everyone deserves the opportunity to grow, contribute, and thrive. 💙

💥 Myth Busting Monday 💥

Myth: People with intellectual or developmental disabilities can’t live independently.

Fact: With the right supports, many people live full, self-directed lives—making choices about where they live, work, and belong. Independence looks different for everyone.

🌎 Earth Day in action!

Despite the misty morning, individuals from our Cedar community inclusion program donned their gloves, and with grabbers in hand, helped clean up Centennial Park in Mission.

Their thoughtfulness and care for the planet — and our shared community spaces — are a great reminder that every small effort counts. 🌱💚
