I recently spoke with an educator who has spent 50 years in this profession. She told me how often younger educators dismiss what she has to offer.

Fifty years. You don’t spend that long working with children and families without learning a few things worth listening to.

That doesn’t mean every practice should stay the same or that experience puts anyone above being questioned. New graduates bring knowledge, skills and ideas we need. But being new doesn’t mean everyone who came before you is outdated.

I’ve been an ECE for over 20 years, and I still learn from colleagues with more experience than me and colleagues who are just starting out.

We can question each other’s thinking without dismissing each other’s contribution.

This letter is for new ECEs. Seasoned educators, yours is coming next.

I think we need more children who challenge us.

There’s a big difference between challenging an adult and being disrespectful, and I think it’s a conversation we need to have more often in early childhood education.

Sometimes what makes our day easier as educators isn't necessarily what's best for children.
