The Benefits of Walking in Grief
Grief affects our whole body; not just our emotions. Walking can be one gentle way to support yourself while moving through grief.
-Helps regulate stress: Gentle movement can help release physical tension and support the body’s stress response.
-Creates space to process emotions: Walking can give you uninterrupted time to think, reflect, remember, or simply notice what you’re feeling.
-Can help clear a busy mind: When grief brings racing thoughts, walking can provide a change of environment and a simple activity to focus your attention on.
-Supports sleep: Regular physical activity can support sleep patterns, which can be helpful when grief disrupts your usual routines.
-Supports your overall wellbeing: Grief can make it difficult to care for yourself. A short walk is one way to incorporate movement and fresh air into your day without needing to accomplish anything else.
-Can reduce isolation: Walking with someone else can create connection when grief feels lonely. You don’t have to talk about your grief; sometimes having company is enough.
-Gets you outside and connected to your surroundings: Nature, fresh air, and a change of scenery can provide moments of grounding and respite during difficult days.
-Can become a way of remembering: Walking can also be meaningful when we intentionally walk in memory of someone we love. Consider viewing your surroundings through their lens; what would they notice or point out to you?
That’s part of what makes our Walk to Remember so meaningful.
Join us for a community walk where we come together to honour the people we love, remember those who have died, and connect with others who understand the experience of grief.
