Thousands of Canadians affected by the 2020 CRA and My Service Canada Account cyberattacks may soon be eligible for compensation after a Federal Court-approved settlement.

The $8.76 million class-action agreement allows eligible victims to claim up to $5,280 for time spent resolving issues, fraud-related impacts, and documented financial losses. With more than 47,000 accounts compromised, the claims portal is expected to open later this summer, giving affected individuals six months to submit their applications. Canadians are encouraged to verify eligibility, gather supporting documents, and remain vigilant against settlement-related scams.

Canada’s job market delivered a surprise boost in May 2026, adding 88,000 positions and sharply reducing unemployment to 6.6%. The gains were powered mainly by full-time employment growth, especially in construction, transportation, and services, helping offset earlier losses this year. However, weaknesses remain in retail and wholesale trade, and overall wage growth is cooling, signalling a mixed but stabilizing economic outlook ahead of the Bank of Canada’s upcoming rate decision.

Canada's economy has officially entered a technical recession after posting back-to-back quarterly GDP contractions. A growing debate is emerging around the impact of recent immigration and international student permit reductions on economic growth.

According to the analysis, international students previously contributed nearly $39 billion to Canada's GDP, generated $47.5 billion in spending, and supported more than 407,000 jobs nationwide. Meanwhile, the 2026 target for new international student arrivals has been reduced to 155,000, representing a significant decline from peak levels.

Education institutions, local businesses, rental markets, and labour-dependent sectors are now feeling the effects, while economists continue to debate whether immigration policy adjustments will be necessary to support long-term economic growth.

With GDP shrinking, population growth slowing, and businesses facing increasing uncertainty, all eyes are now on Ottawa's next immigration policy decisions.

Canada has launched a landmark national AI strategy titled “AI for All”, introduced by Mark Carney in Toronto, setting out one of the most ambitious digital transformation plans in the country’s history.

The plan aims to generate $200 billion in economic growth, create 250,000 AI-related jobs by 2034, and raise national AI adoption from just over 12% to 60%. It also includes training programs for 1 million post-secondary students, 90,000 youth work placements, and upskilling initiatives for workers across industries.

The strategy focuses on three pillars: building trust in AI systems, expanding economic opportunities, and strengthening Canada’s digital sovereignty through investments in compute infrastructure, education, and innovation ecosystems.

Officials say the initiative will help Canada compete globally while ensuring AI is developed responsibly and benefits everyday Canadians in healthcare, business, education, and public services.

Canada is currently facing two consecutive quarters of economic contraction, and Prime Minister Mark Carney has acknowledged that lower immigration levels are contributing to the slowdown. However, despite this economic pressure, the government has not increased permanent residence targets. Instead, the focus remains on balancing immigration with housing availability, public services, and affordability concerns.

This signals that in the short term, PR allocations are unlikely to rise significantly. For applicants, this makes it more important than ever to clearly understand their eligibility, explore all possible pathways, and plan strategically instead of relying on increased quotas in the future.
