🇧🇷 RIO DE JANEIRO’S MILITARY POLICE K9 UNIT 🐕‍🦺

During my visit to the Canine Operations Battalion of Rio de Janeiro’s Military Police, I had the opportunity to learn about the remarkable work of its 60 highly trained police dogs and their handlers.

These incredible dogs are trained for specialized tasks, including detecting drugs and fi****ms, while supporting police operations in challenging environments.

In 2024, Rio’s BAC canine unit seized a record 24 tonnes of drugs (24,000 kilograms) — the highest annual total in the unit’s history at that time.

Operating throughout the state of Rio de Janeiro, home to approximately 16 million people, the unit works 365 days a year, supporting specialized police operations, including in high-risk areas affected by armed criminal activity.

One of the most interesting aspects of my visit was learning about the dogs themselves — their intelligence, discipline, specialized training and the strong bond they develop with their handlers.

🇧🇷🇨🇦 Two countries. Two different policing systems.

Brazil has two main state-level police services with distinct roles: the Military Police, responsible primarily for uniformed, preventive and public-order policing while the Civil Police is responsible primarily for criminal investigations.

In Canada, policing is structured differently. Municipal police services, such as the Toronto Police Service, handle frontline policing, public safety, and criminal investigations. Military Police in Canada serve the Canadian Armed Forces community.

Two countries, different systems, and unique challenges. Learning about policing around the world offers valuable opportunities to understand different approaches to public safety and law enforcement.

Ultimately, the goal is to serve communities, protect the public, and contribute to a safer society!

Travelling is more than seeing new places, it broadens perspective, builds cultural understanding and helps one appreciate the different challenges communities and law enforcement face around the world.

In Colombia, policing continues to navigate challenges including organized crime, drug trafficking, armed groups, violence and corruption, while working to maintain public safety and community trust.

Understanding how policing operates in different countries can make officers more informed, adaptable and culturally aware when serving their own communities here locally.

Bogotá was a beautiful city, and the stay was made even more meaningful through the conversations and connections with Colombian police officers. Sharing experiences, perspectives and the common challenges of policing was a reminder that, despite different countries and circumstances, there is a shared commitment to serving and protecting communities!

An incredible evening celebrating at the TPAAA Athletic Banquet!

Last evening was about much more than sports. It was about the people behind the teams, the athletes, volunteers, coaches, community partners and first responders who continue to make the TPAAA so special.

From bringing back the TPAAA Police Games, to celebrating championships and achievements across so many sports, and the tremendous work underway for the 2027 World Police & Fire Games in Perth, it has been an unforgettable year.

I am incredibly grateful for the trust placed in me to serve as the President of this great organization, and even more grateful to be surrounded by such an amazing group of people!

The medals and trophies are great, but the friendships, camaraderie and memories we build together are what truly last.

Thank you to everyone who makes the TPAAA what it is. This is our association, our team, and our family 🙏🏼

Born in the ’80s… but what if I was a police officer in Toronto in the ’80s?

Back then, Toronto was policed by the Metropolitan Toronto Police Force, long before it became the Toronto Police Service we know today. The cruisers looked different, the technology was different, the uniforms were different — but the job came down to the same thing: show up, protect people and serve the community!

A few facts about policing in Toronto in the ’80s:

-Over 5,400 members were on the Metropolitan Toronto Police Force in 1981, including about 3,584 constables.

-Metro Police covered a region of more than 2.5 million people and had five major districts.

-Policing was beginning to change. Zone Policing was introduced around 1982–83, with officers assigned to specific areas so they could become more familiar with their communities. Community-based policing expanded later in the decade.

-And technology? A far different world. Metro Police already had a computerized radio dispatch system, but there were obviously no smartphones, body-worn cameras or GPS on every cruiser.

The Trinidad & Tobago Police Cricket Club 🇹🇹made their first-ever tour of Canada🇨🇦, taking on the Toronto Police Cricket Club in a friendly yet fiercely competitive match — and the day did not disappoint!

Hundreds of community members and players came together to enjoy great cricket, culture, and camaraderie.

But this was more than just a cricket match. It opened the door to meaningful international police partnerships, new connections, and friendships that we hope will last a lifetime.
