Targets can only become action when countries have the support to implement them.

At , Parties will discuss how capacity-building and technical and scientific cooperation can better support the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

This includes looking at how support can become more coherent, sustained, and responsive to national needs, moving beyond fragmented or short-term activities toward approaches that help countries deliver lasting results.

Because accelerating biodiversity action is not only about what needs to be done. It is about ensuring that the knowledge, tools, partnerships, and resources are in place to make it possible.

In this week’s continuation of the target countdown, we’re focusing on how wild species provide food, medicines, livelihoods, and many other benefits that support people around the world.

Target 9 of the calls for the sustainable management and use of wild species, ensuring these benefits can continue to support present and future generations. Wild terrestrial, freshwater, and marine species contribute to social, economic and environmental well-being, particularly for people who rely most directly on biodiversity.

The target also recognises the importance of sustainable biodiversity-based activities, products, and services as well as the role of indigenous peoples and local communities in stewarding biodiversity through customary sustainable use.

By promoting the sustainable use of wild species, Target 9 helps support food security, health, and livelihoods while contributing to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.

At , Parties will review how subnational governments, cities, and other local authorities are contributing to the implementation of the Convention and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

Biosafety is a key part of protecting biodiversity, health, and sustainable development.

Through the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, Parties work to ensure living modified organisms are handled, transported, and used safely, with appropriate systems in place.

At , Parties will review progress made so far and look at where further action and support may be needed, including for national biosafety frameworks, risk assessment, capacity-building, resource mobilisation, and information-sharing through the Biosafety Clearing-House.

Sharing benefits from biodiversity starts with strong implementation.

At , Parties will look at updated evidence on how the Nagoya Protocol is being implemented: what progress has been made, what challenges remain, and what actions could help strengthen access and benefit-sharing in practice.

The review will also support discussions on areas such as capacity-building, awareness-raising, the ABS Clearing-House, financial mechanisms, and resources.

By taking stock of implementation, Parties can help ensure benefits arising from the use of genetic resources are shared in a fair and equitable way.

The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological welcomes the launch of the Phoenix Species Project by Re:wild and Bezos Earth Fund, a major new commitment to support the recovery of 100 of the world's most threatened species through sustained, long-term conservation investment. The initiative begins with a US$200 million commitment focused on species classified as Critically Endangered and Extinct in the Wild.

Species recovery is essential to achieving the vision of living in harmony with nature by 2050. The initiative aligns closely with Target 4 of the , calling for urgent action to halt human-induced extinctions, recover threatened species, and maintain genetic diversity, as well as Target 19, seeking to mobilise the finance needed to support implementation.

We look forward to seeing the impact of this important effort for biodiversity worldwide.

Target 10 of the focuses on ensuring that agriculture, aquaculture, fisheries, and forestry are managed sustainably while supporting the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.

Efforts to implement the target are taking place across a range of production systems, including through biodiversity-friendly practices, sustainable management approaches, and measures that strengthen the resilience of food and livelihood systems.

As pressures on biodiversity continue to grow, Target 10 plays an important role in supporting food security, ecosystem health, and sustainable development.

📊 Progress on Target 10, alongside the other targets, is assessed in the first Global Report on collective progress. Its findings will inform the Global Review at , helping Parties identify where implementation is advancing and where greater efforts are needed.
