Every second matters when someone is seriously injured. This summer, Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Combat Medics are training at the Connaught Ranges to improve how we deal with casualties that require blood transfusions.

This isn’t just training; it’s a major evolution in how we prepare medical personnel to care for casualties in operational environments.

Now, instead of casualties receiving transfusions after reaching a deployed field hospital, they will receive life-saving blood immediately in the operational field where possible.

This important training will make sure our medics stay ready for all situations in a field that provides care when it matters the most.

Notice: Introduction of the Occupational Health Technologist (OHT) and Public Health Officer (PHO) occupations

As part of ongoing modernization efforts, the CAF is retiring the Preventive Medicine Technician (PMed Tech) occupation and introducing two new occupations: Occupational Health Technologist (OHT) and Public Health Officer (PHO).

What does this mean?

The new occupations will create specialized career paths in occupational and public health, providing more focused training, enhanced expertise, and stronger support to CAF operational readiness. Current PMed Techs will transition to either OHT or PHO based on their preferences, qualifications, and service requirements.

Today, on National Peacekeepers' Day, we give thanks for all those who have worked in support of international peace and security operations.

On this day, we also remember the nine Canadian Armed Forces members who lost their lives on August 9, 1974, when their aircraft, serving with the United Nations Emergency Force in the Middle East, was shot down. This is the greatest single loss of Canadian lives on a peacekeeping mission.

Since 1948, more than 125,000 Canadian peacekeepers have participated in dozens of international efforts all over the world. Their courage, professionalism, and commitment have made a lasting impact.

Today, we thank all of the brave individuals who have served and who continue to save lives around the globe.

Real-world readiness starts with realistic and dynamic training.

Last month, members of the Canadian Forces Health Services participated in Exercise VIGOROUS WARRIOR 2026 in Estonia, NATO's largest multinational medical field training exercise.

Including activities such as dealing with cyber threats or responding to a simulated attack on a NATO member nation, Ex VIGOROUS WARRIOR was designed to place medical personnel, systems, and infrastructure under realistic operational pressure. The exercise provided an opportunity to enhance and validate operational readiness, strengthen interoperability, and refine how medical support is delivered in complex operational environments.
