As we enter the last month of the winter semester, many of you are frantically finishing (or starting!) your term papers. This includes the so often overlooked until the last minute: citations. If you haven’t been using a citation manager then it’s time to start, these tools help keep you on track throughout your research so you aren’t left 12 hours to deadline with a beautifully written paper and a jumbled mess of citations. You have a few options of which software to use that you can read about on our citations LibGuide https://libraryguides.mcgill.ca/citation/home
The little known fact which may influence your choice of software, is that Zotero actually includes the McGill 9th Edition Cite Guide in their style repository. This can definitely save you some time but comes with a big caveat that you still need to double check the automated citations. Zotero will get you started but legal citations often require a bit more creativity than a software can provide.

Sometimes I get a research question that I think is going to take me 5 minutes and it ends up taking closer to 5 hours! Last week I got a question from someone looking for Canadian Prime Minister’s speeches, and not from 100 years ago, they were specifically looking for speeches given by Stephen Harper. I also know (and now you do too) that the full content of every speech given by the current Prime Minister can be found on their website (https://pm.gc.ca). So surely we have immaculate preservation of Prime Ministerial speeches from 2006-2015? Well, preserved maybe, but not so accessible. A search for former PM speeches will lead to a lot of dead ends and broken links. This is when I turn to my #1 research Frenemy, The Wayback Machine. If you don’t know about it, go check it out (https://archive.org/web/) it’s a web archiving tool and you can find some very funny 90’s websites archived there. It also turns out to sometimes be helpful for research. Like when you need a PM speech from 2011, so you search https://pm.gc.ca in the Wayback Machine, select your date and find a copy of the 2011 Prime Minister's website with full speech content included.

Many McGill Law students are excited about the prospect of writing an independent term paper in lieu of a regular class. However, this can be confusing if you have never written a term paper before. We’ve gotten a few questions lately asking for a “term essay template” or a “proposal template” that the library might have on hand for students to follow. Well, the answer is no, we do not have a standardized template for term essays at McGill. Ultimately, the guidelines you should follow will be provided by your supervisor, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get an idea of what a term essay (or proposal) might look like before you commit yourself to the process.

But the bottom line is ask your supervisor! These resources will give you an idea of what will be expected of you, but your supervisor has final say.
