The Omushkegowuk Justice department is inviting community members to offer input into the development of a Regional Justice Strategy.
This strategy aims to improve access to justice for our members and address critical gaps across our region.
We want that strategy to truly reflect the needs of our people. That is why input from community members and their participation in this survey is so valuable.

Members of Mushkegowuk’s Youth and Health departments and Six Seasons Youth Program were among those who joined in the celebration in Kashechewan last week, supporting the community’s annual Resilience Festival and assisting with the Welcome Home Gathering.

Starting from: 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗺𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲.

As frontline workers, community helpers, community leaders, and survivors impacted by residential schools and historical trauma, we understand that this day can be challenging. Often, the responsibility of organizing these events falls on us, our own people, while we continue to support our communities and navigate our own healing journeys.
This year, we want to bring the focus back to ourselves and one another.
We walk to heal. We walk to remember. We walk to honour our people and recognize the strength and resilience that continue to carry us forward.
We warmly invite all departments and staff to join us as we come together in remembrance, healing, unity, and hope.

The Mushkegowuk Justice department now has a presence on Facebook where you’ll find information and updates on various programs, educational resources, program-related events and giveaways.

The Mushkegowuk Justice department was launched at the beginning of this year and oversees five programs: Regional Restorative Justice, Restorative Justice Liaison, FASD Justice Support, Drug Treatment Court and Mamowi Pimotaniwak “Walking Together” (Indigenous Bail Bed Program).

While most of the programs support individuals involved in the court system, the Restorative Justice Program also focuses on diversion initiatives, including pre-charge options, Omushkegowuk approaches to justice, and land-based healing.

The department is also driving the Regional Justice Strategy, a collaborative effort to assess justice needs and service gaps across the Mushkegowuk region, with the goal of improving access to Western justice for community members and strengthening our own Indigenous laws and bylaws. More information will be shared on our page in the coming weeks.

Albalina Metatawabin, CEO of Mushkegowuk Development Corporation, was presented with a Service Award from the Timmins Chamber after concluding her six-year term as a board member.
The award, presented Thursday morning during the Chamber’s annual general meeting, was in recognition of Metatawabin’s “volunteer work and dedication to the Chamber and to the community.”

MJ Filo, communications and policy lead with the Timmins Chamber, expressed her appreciation for Metatawabin's input over the last six years.
“I reach out to her very often for her thoughts and perspectives, especially when it comes to First Nation input on any of our policy resolutions," said Filo. "So, we’re hoping we can still loop her back in every once in a while and she continues to provide her voice and her perspective on our committees.”

𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲 & 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗿
The event will take place on Friday, Sept. 18 from from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Reg Louttit Sportsplex Community Hall in Attawapiskat.
Jointly hosted by Mushkegowuk Social Development and Nishnawbe Aski Legal Services.

Mamowihitowin 2026, a gathering being held this week to celebrate the joint history of Fort Albany and Kashechewan, is being hosted by Fort Albany. There are about 250 people here, with members and representatives from both communities.

Staff from Mushkegowuk Health and Lands & Resources are among those in attendance. Health staff are sharing health-related information while Lands staff are engaging with community members in a mapping exercise.
