Camp Chikepak, the free summer camp offered by Mushkegowuk Council to Omushkego youths ages 9 to 14, kicked off its 10th year this week.

It runs for two weeks at Camp Bickell, located just east of Timmins. There are approximately 80 young campers (160 total) attending each week. There are children from all seven Mushkegowuk communities as well as Peawanuck attending the camp this year.

The programming at Camp Chikepak offers a mix of Indigenous cultural activities and western science.

The camp is organized and overseen by Mushkegowuk Council’s Cree Geomatics department with support from the Youth department and this year Mushkegowuk’s Six Seasons Youth Program.

The programming involves many partners including local Elders, knowledge keepers, artists plus representatives from various organizations and educational institutes, as well as staff from other departments within Mushkegowuk Council.

Representatives from the Šawelihcikewin fundraising campaign to restore and renew the old St. Thomas Church had a display set up at the Gathering Of Our People celebration in Moose Factory this week.
The renewal effort is a project that Mushkegowuk Council’s leadership has taken a keen interest in.
Deputy Grand Chief Natasha Martin is one of the campaign ambassadors for this initiative.

“Old St. Thomas is such an iconic building, connected to Moose Factory’s history,” said Cecil Chabot, executive director of the Moose River Heritage and Hospitality Association.

The church was consecrated in 1864.

“By 2006, it had to be closed because of the condition of the building and the tower, and it was just too costly to maintain,” said Chabot.

The campaign to refurbish the church was launched in 2021 has so far raised $1.2 million.
Chabot said they need to raise another $4 million to restore the building and to convert it into a multi-use community centre.

He said the core structure of the building is fairly sound, but a key problem is with the foundation. So, they’ll have to jack up the building to reinforce it, straighten the steeple and replace any rotting timbers.
“We’re also adding more to the building as well, things that it’s never had like heating and cooling … we’re also adding washrooms, which it never had, and a kitchenette.”

Chabot said they have applied for government grants totalling $2 million and they’re hoping to raise the other $2 million through corporate donations and community-based fundraising initiatives.

If the grants are approved and they have enough money banked, they would like to have a contractor in place next year. Ideally, some preliminary work will begin next summer with the project’s completion by 2029.

“We would love to have a Christmas concert in that building in 2029,” said Chabot.

There were 32 teams that participated in the Mushkegowuk Golf Classic tournament held at the Spruce Needles Golf Club in Timmins on Friday, July 24.

The tournament is designed to be a fun event, open to players of all skill levels. It follows a scramble format where all players tee off, and the team then plays the ball from the best landing spot.

The vast majority of participants were Mushkegowuk community members or Council employees who brought along friends or family. However, there were also friends, visitors or supporters of Mushkegowuk from outside the territory who took part in the day’s events.

CreeFest is an annual celebration of Cree culture hosted by Mushkegowuk Council that highlights the talents or Indigenous artists and performers throughout the region.
This year, CreeFest was held at the McIntyre Community Building in Timmins July 21 to 23 and made use of the arena, ballroom, the auditorium and curling rink.
These photos were taken during the first two days of the three-day event.
CreeFest 2026 continues today (Thursday) with more live acts performing this evening.

Creefest 2026 kicks off in Timmins next week with vendors, entertainers and activities scheduled in the arena, curling rink and ballroom of the McIntyre Community Building.
