On October 17, 1931, Al Capone was convicted on five counts (of a total 23) brought against him for tax evasion. While this may have seemed like the best-case scenario for Capone, he didn’t see what came next. He was sentenced to 11 years in federal prison and was made to pay over $57,000 to the court and $215,000 plus interest due on back taxes.
He served seven years of his sentence and was then released in November 1939 due to severe health decline. He spent the rest of his life privately with his family until his death in 1947.
