Pink Shirt Day reminds us that kindness is a choice we make every day.

Today, we stand together as a community to say clearly: bullying, whether in our schools, workplaces, or online, has no place here.

As Elected Chief, I want to recognize the young people, parents, caregivers, staff, and community members who step in, speak up, and support one another. Creating safe spaces is something we build together through our actions, our voices, and the way we treat each other.

Wearing pink isn’t the whole message. Living kindness, respect, and accountability is. Let’s keep showing our youth that they deserve safety, support, and a community that has their back.

Hands speak, hearts listen.
September 23 is International Sign Language Day. We join communities across the world in honouring the beauty and diversity of sign languages. This day recognizes the importance of accessibility, inclusion, and the rich cultures and languages of Deaf and Hard of Hearing peoples.

Here in Oneida Nation of the Thames, we are proud to recognize Oneida Sign Language (OSL), a First Nations sign language taught and shared by Elder Teyuhuhtakweku (Marsha) Ireland, Turtle Clan.

OSL is not Oneida translated into ASL. It draws from longstanding sign systems used among First Nations across North America, including the people of the Plains Sign Talk. OSL blends these with Oneida storytelling gestures. Marsha’s teachings help keep this language strong so it will be carried forward for future generations.

On this day, we also reflect on the Deaf Flag. A blue and turquoise banner featuring an ear-shaped hand motif surrounded by a wave pattern. It represents unity within Deaf communities worldwide and the vibrancy of Deaf culture, language, and identity.

Today we celebrate Marsha’s and many others hard work and the many ways sign languages connect and strengthen our communities.

📢 Better Health Care for Our Community

On Wednesday, August 13th, I was honoured to join partners at Southwest Middlesex Health Centre in Mount Brydges for an exciting announcement. Through the Ontario Government’s $5.3 million investment in Elgin-Middlesex-London, more people will finally have access to the primary care they’ve been waiting for.

For Oneida, this means a real step forward — with a commitment to take on at least 2,000 new First Nation patients over the next three years. This will help alleviate the long waitlist and connect more of our members to family doctors and care teams.

Southwest Middlesex Health Centre is also committed to supporting transportation for patients from Oneida, Chippewa, and Munsee, so care is truly within reach.
