Deshkan Ziibiing offices will be closed Wednesday, September 30, for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, so our staff and community can take the day to remember together. We invite everyone to wear orange and honour survivors, their families, and the little ones who never came home.

Offices reopen Thursday, October 1.

On Friday, October 23, women in the communities of Chippewa, Muncey and Oneida are invited to a private breast and cervical screening day at Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital.

Regular screening is one of the most reliable things a person can do for their long term health. Breast and cervical cancers are among the most treatable when they are found early, often before there are any symptoms at all, which is exactly why the screening happens on a schedule rather than in response to something feeling wrong.

This day is set up to make that as straightforward as possible. Transportation is provided, and registration goes through your own health centre. A Knowledge Keeper will share traditional knowledge on women's health. Cervical screening will be done by the Midwives of Middlesex and Area. Before screening begins, health professionals will walk through what mammography, cervical screening, and FIT testing involve, so there is time to ask questions first. Light refreshments will be served.

Breast screening is for ages 40 to 74. Cervical screening is for ages 25 to 69. The day runs from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Pre-registration is required. Deshkan Ziibiing members can register with Connie French at the Chippewa Health Centre, 519-289-5641 ext. 231. Oneida members can reach Kathy Rowe at 519-652-0500 ext. 817, and Munsee members can reach Lauryn Kechego at 519-289-5396 ext. 229.

COTTFN's Residential School Survivors and Descendants Advisory Circle invites you to a workshop to make a name tag for Orange Shirt Day.

On Saturday, September 26, from 1 to 3 pm, community members are invited to the Heritage Building to make a name tag for a family member who attended a Residential School.

You can wear your family name tag on the Healing Walk that will take place on Orange Shirt Day (National Day of Truth and Reconciliation) - - Wednesday, September 30th.

The name tag workshop is on Saturday, September 26th, from 1 to 3pm at the Heritage Building. A light lunch will be served.

The South West Regional Cancer Program is hosting an Indigenous Communities Gathering on Friday, October 16, and everyone is welcome.

The day is built around the cancer journey as our communities actually live it: screening and prevention, traditional medicines, survivorship, and what care looks like across the whole continuum.

Cancer touches almost every family here, and too often the hardest part is walking it without people who understand where you come from. This is a room where that understanding is already in place.

The day opens with a sunrise ceremony at 7:30 a.m., followed by breakfast and registration check-in at 8:30 a.m. The conference runs from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at N'Amerind Friendship Centre, 260 Colborne Street in London.

The event is free. Mileage reimbursement is not provided.

The Residential School Survivors and Descendants Advisory Circle is asking Jingle Dress Dancers from the community to join us on our Healing Walk on Wednesday, September 30.

Members of the community are asked to be at the Residential School Monument for Sunrise Ceremony. We will then begin our walk to the Ball Park. There will be a Healing Dance at the intersection of Jubilee and Mount Elgin, before we continue the walk.

Each dancer will receive a gift card.

The 14th Annual Harvest Feast is happening Friday, October 9 from 5 to 7 PM at the Chippewa Community Centre. Come share a turkey dinner with family and friends, try your luck on door prizes, and take part in our Thanksgiving baskets. This year's feast is hosted by the Anishinaabek Food Rights Program together with Deshkan Ziibiing departments, and we can't wait to gather with you.

📣 CALLING ALL CATERERS: We're looking for a caterer to help us feed 200 people at this year's feast.

The Anishinaabek Food Rights Program is accepting bids for catering services. The menu includes turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, vegetables, dinner rolls, dessert, and pop, juice and water, along with plates, cutlery and napkins. Any food from the feast will be shared with families of the Nation.

To submit a bid:
✅ You must be on the approved Chippewas of the Thames catering list
✅ Include a copy of the certified safe food handler certificate for the person supervising kitchen preparation
✅ Submit your bid in a sealed envelope to Ryan Kechego, AFR Coordinator, Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, 328 Chippewa Rd., Muncey, ON N0L 1Y0

COMMUNITY AWARENESS NOTICE: Drainage Work and Temporary Road Closures

Our Public Works team is carrying out drainage work near the intersection of Anishinaabeg Road and 3 Fires Road over the next two days.

Anishinaabeg Road will be temporarily closed for today, Wednesday, September 23, for culvert work. 3 Fires Road will be temporarily closed tomorrow, Thursday, September 24.

Work is expected to wrap up Thursday, with both roads fully open on Friday, September 25. Please plan an alternate route and use caution around crews and equipment in the area.

This week's Anishinaabemowin word is Mshkodewashk, meaning sage. 🌿

Clarity brings us one of our four sacred medicines this week, and the name itself is worth a closer look. Mshkode means prairie, and the -ashk ending marks a plant, so sage is named for the open land it grows on.

Now listen to wiingashk, sweetgrass. Same ending, another of our medicines.
