October 16 is Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) Day in Fundy Shores.

DLD affects approximately 1 in 14 people, yet many people have never heard of it. It is often described as a hidden disability because the signs can be easily missed or misunderstood.

A person with DLD might:

· have difficulty following instructions or understanding questions
· struggle to find the words they want to say
· have difficulty learning new words
· have difficulty putting their thoughts into sentences
· struggle to tell a story or explain what happened in order
· need more time to understand or respond

These difficulties can sometimes look like inattention, lack of effort, behaviour difficulties, or difficulty learning, when language may be part of what is happening.

DLD can affect learning, literacy, relationships, and everyday communication, and it continues into adulthood.

By declaring October 16 DLD Day, Fundy Shores is helping make this common but often hidden and misunderstood condition more visible.

The more we understand DLD, the less hidden it becomes.
