📢 Nemaska Community Notice 🔈

GoRecycle will be coming to Nemaska at the end of August to pick up appliances containing refrigerants and halocarbons.

If you have refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, water dispensers, or other cooling appliances, please bring them to the Eco-Center.

♻️ Please do not leave items outside. They will be properly stored at the Eco-Center until pick-up.

Please share and help us spread the word throughout the community. 🌱♻️

OLD BOARDWALK REOPENING

The Department of Land and Sustainable Development is pleased to announce that the Old Boardwalk is now officially reopened to the public!

All necessary repairs are complete, and the boardwalk is once again open for community members and visitors to enjoy.

A special thank you goes out to our hardworking crew, who put in tremendous time, effort, and dedication to complete these repairs. Their hard work was essential in restoring the boardwalk and making it safe and accessible again for our community.

We also want to thank community members for their patience and understanding during the temporary closure while our crew carried out this important work.

The Old Boardwalk is OPEN — come out and enjoy the trail!

Please continue to use the boardwalk responsibly and help us keep this important community space clean, safe, and enjoyable for everyone.

⚠️ TEMPORARY CLOSURE – OLD BOARDWALK

The Old Boardwalk is temporarily closed while repair and rehabilitation work is underway.

During recent inspections, several sections of the boardwalk were identified as requiring repairs to ensure the continued safety of all users. Our crews are actively replacing damaged decking and structural components along multiple locations throughout the trail.

🛠️ Current Work Includes:

Replacement of deteriorated deck boards
Structural repairs at identified locations
Reinforcement of damaged sections
General safety improvements

📍The attached map shows the locations where repairs are currently being completed, along with photos of the work in progress.

🚫 For your safety, please do not enter or use the Old Boardwalk until all repairs have been completed and the trail has officially reopened.

We appreciate everyone's patience and understanding as we work to restore this important community trail.

We will provide another update as soon as the repairs are complete and the boardwalk is safe to reopen.

Old Nemaska Zero Waste Collection Program - COMPOSTING

Hello, Nemaska community and visitors to Old Nemaska!

As always, we continue working together to care for the ancestral lands we all share. We’re pleased to announce that workers have been hired for the Old Nemaska Zero Waste Collection Program.

We encourage everyone to help by separating compostable materials from other waste whenever possible. Compostable materials will be collected separately, while the remaining waste will be taken to the EcoCentre or landfill.

By working together and continuing this initiative each year, we can reduce the amount of waste sent to the landfill and build a stronger, more sustainable community for future generations.

Join us for an Environmental DNA (eDNA) training right here in the Cree Nation of Nemaska. 🐟🧬🧪

Discover how tiny traces of DNA in our waters can reveal the presence of fish and wildlife. Helping us better understand, protect, and care for our land. This hands-on training is a unique chance to blend modern science with traditional knowledge, strengthening our connection to the environment for future generations.

Whether you’re curious about science, passionate about the land, or eager to learn new skills, everyone is welcome!

🌎 Let’s come together to learn, share, and protect what matters most.

*Participants will be compensated at the standard training rate of $100 per day or $250 for the three‑day session.

The Department of Land and Sustainable Development is pleased to announce that the construction of three new viewing decks has now been completed. Each deck features picnic tables and bench seating, creating comfortable spaces for community members and visitors to rest, gather, and enjoy the beautiful scenery around Champion Lake.

Additional Features Planned:

- Historical interpretive signage featuring archival photographs
Story of Elder Stories sharing the history of Champion Lake (with QR codes linking to videos)
- Portable toilets
- Safety Signs
- Waste and Recycle bins
And more…

These cultural elements will help preserve and share our history with future generations while strengthening our connection to the land. Additional project features will improve safety and accessibility while enhancing the visitor experience.

Work is also continuing on the installation of metal roof sheeting on the decks, structural bracing, and bolt reinforcement on the entire length of the boardwalk to ensure long-term durability and safety. Please be careful while this work progresses.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to making this project a reality and the hard work from our boardwalk crew. We look forward to welcoming community members and visitors to enjoy this unique space that celebrates both our natural environment and our Cree history.

Please note community input plays an important role in maintaining our boardwalk. We encourage residents to share their ideas and suggestions, which are recorded and reviewed to help us make the boardwalk safer, more accessible, and enjoyable for all community members and visitors.

The Department of Land and Sustainable Development is pleased to announce that the Nemaska Boardwalk is now fully open for public use!

Thanks to the dedication and hard work of our Boardwalk crew, all sections of the boardwalk are once again accessible for walking, outdoor enjoyment, and experiencing the beautiful surroundings of Champion Lake.

As you enjoy the boardwalk, please use caution as construction and improvement work is still ongoing at three deck locations along the route. We ask all users to respect any signage, barriers, and work areas to help ensure the safety of both visitors and workers.

Over the coming weeks, additional features will also be installed to further enhance the boardwalk experience, including:
• Viewing and resting decks overlooking Champion Lake
• Portable toilet facilities
• Garbage bins along the route

These improvements are intended to make the boardwalk more comfortable, accessible, and enjoyable for all users while helping keep the area clean and welcoming.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we continue to invest in this important community asset. We hope everyone enjoys a safe and memorable summer on the Nemaska Boardwalk!
