Open Fire Ban in Eeyou Istchee | Am I affected by the ban?

An open fire ban is now in effect across Eeyou Istchee. The Ministère de la Sécurité intérieure du Québec (MSI), in collaboration with SOPFEU, has banned open fires in or near forested areas as of June 9 at 6:00 p.m.

The ban applies to the Nord-du-Québec region — which includes all of Eeyou Istchee — as well as Abitibi-Témiscamingue, Côte-Nord, Mauricie, Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, and the Charlevoix-Est portion of the Capitale-Nationale, due to current conditions.

As we head into the season on the land, we ask all Eeyouch to respect this ban and take extra care to protect our communities, our territory, and one another.

PRESS RELEASE

Cree First Nation of Waswanipi, Cree Nation Government, Grand Council of the Crees (Eeyou Istchee), and Gold Fields Sign Landmark Impact Benefit Agreement for the Windfall Project.

Montreal, June 2nd, 2026 – The Cree First Nation of Waswanipi (CFNW), the Cree Nation Government and the Grand Council of the Crees (Eeyou Istchee) (CNG/GCC(EI),) and Windfall Mining Group inc. (Gold Fields) are pleased to announce the signing of an Impact Benefit Agreement (IBA) for the Windfall Mining Project, known as the Uukiimau Agreement (ᐆᑮᒪᐤ ᓀᔅᑯᒨᓐ) (Oo-ki-maw). Uukiimau meaning “the leader” or “the head” – is a name that speaks to both origin and direction, like the headwaters of a river, and honours Father Lake, a place of deep cultural significance for the tallyman. A defining moment that marks an enduring partnership built on mutual respect, shared purpose, and a common vision for the future. This agreement is a commitment made in good faith, rooted in sustained dialogue, and designed to last for the full life of the Windfall operation.

The Uukiimau Agreement establishes a comprehensive framework spanning financial, operational, environmental, and social commitment, ensuring that the development of natural resources in this region creates genuine, lasting benefits for Cree communities and future generations.

A celebratory ceremony will be held in Waswanipi on June 10, 2026.

Yesterday morning, the Cree Nation awoke to a message from the family of Isaac Masty that he had begun his journey to the spirit world.

Isaac was known and respected by so many. He served his community as Chief during the early years of the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement, a foundational and demanding period in which Cree leaders worked to establish institutions and protections that continue to serve our Nation today. His leadership in those formative years helped lay the groundwork for the self-determination Eeyou Istchee enjoys now.

The Cree Nation Government wishes to extend its sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Isaac Masty. Mista mikwec for your service to the people and the land, may you rest in peace.
