Recently, I was proud to join PSAC - AFPC Local 71250, representing Bank of Canada security workers, on their picket line. These workers have been on strike for more than two months, fighting for fair parental leave and reasonable scheduling provisions. Yet less than a year after federal anti-scab legislation came into force, the Liberal government is standing by while replacement workers are being used to undermine their bargaining power.

This unacceptable, and it reflects a broader pattern of disrespect toward workers, unions and the right to collective bargaining. The government should put an end to the use of scab labour, enforce the anti-scab protections workers fought for, and ensure these workers are treated with the fairness and respect they deserve.

And at a time when this government is even considering measures that could weaken the right to strike, New Democrats will fight like hell to defend workers’ rights and make sure working people always have a strong voice in the halls of power.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Amshen (Joan Phillip), a devoted Indigenous leader, lifelong activist and steadfast friend of working people.

Joan dedicated her life to advancing Indigenous rights, justice, human rights and environmental protection. Her courage, wisdom and unwavering belief in collective action inspired all who had the privilege of working alongside her.

Her leadership has strengthened BCGEU’s ongoing commitment to reconciliation and to building a more just future grounded in respect for Indigenous rights, title and sovereignty.

We extend our deepest condolences to Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, Joan’s family, community and all those who loved her. Her powerful legacy will live on.

We at MoveUP are heartbroken to hear of the passing of MLA Joan Phillip, Amshen, earlier today. Joan was a leader, a visionary, a teacher and a friend to the labour movement. The loss of her presence will leave a massive and unfillable hole in our communities. Our hearts are with her family, friends, and the love of her life Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, as they navigate this profoundly difficult time. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers to make a donation to the Cancer Society of BC.

PSAC expresses its solidarity with the communities affected by the devastating floods in Nepal and Tibet. Our thoughts are with the victims, those still missing, including several Canadians, and their loved ones who are waiting for news.
