🤔Cart or Depot? Sort Plastic Right!

Not all plastic belongs in your curbside recycling cart!

🥗Rigid plastic containers like yogurt tubs, margarine containers, clamshell packaging, bottles, jugs and trays can go in your curbside recycling cart.

☁️Soft plastics like plastic bags, overwrap, crinkly wrappers, bubble wrap and flexible packaging, as well as items like foam packaging, must be taken to a recycling depot.

💻️When in doubt, check the What Goes Where tool before you toss it at rdn.bc.ca/what-goes-where.

🚧Wastewater infrastructure along Hammond Bay Road is more than 50 years old and nearing the end of its life. The upcoming Departure Bay Pumpstation and Forcemain Expansion project is critically important to the region’s wastewater system. 🚧

Did you know the RDN's Solid Waste Management Plan aims to divert 90% of waste from the landfill? 🤯♻️

In simple terms, that means we need to keep as much material as possible out of the landfill by reusing, recycling, and composting instead.

One of the biggest opportunities for waste reduction is with construction, renovation, and demolition materials. Donated cabinets, lumber, doors, windows, and other building materials can find a second life in homes and community projects.

Here's how you can help!

Habitat for Humanity Mid-Vancouver Island and Building Material Exchange (BMEx) are partnering on the Don't Dump It, Donate It! campaign to keep valuable building materials in use and out of the landfill. The RDN's Zero Waste Recycling Fund helps to support local organizations develop innovative waste reduction and reuse initiatives to help us achieve the RDN’s solid waste goals.

Contractors, developers, suppliers, manufacturers, tradespeople, and residents across Mid-Vancouver Island are encouraged to donate reusable building materials instead of sending them to the landfill.

Perks of participating:
✅ Save money on disposal costs
✅ Receive a charitable tax receipt for eligible donations
✅ Free jobsite pickups available
✅ Easy drop-off at your local Habitat ReStore
✅ Compete for the Top Donor title and the Community Reuse Leadership Award
