In Ontario, 28% of adults aged 15 and older identify as having a disability (*Statistics Canada’s Canadian Survey on Disability).
That's more than one in four Ontarians.
Many people with disabilities have valuable skills, experience, and a desire to work. Yet barriers, both visible and invisible, can still make it harder to find and keep meaningful employment.
Imagine the impact if more workplaces focused on ability instead of assumptions?
At Career Edge, we use RISE & SHINE to guide how we work with job seekers and employers. It's our strengths-based, trauma-informed approach to helping people recognize potential, reduce barriers, and create more inclusive, fair chance workplaces.
Because when we remove barriers, we don't just create opportunities for individuals, we strengthen our communities and our economy.

Every hiring process is designed to find the right candidate, but could it also be screening out great talent???
Requirements that aren't essential, automated screening or unconscious bias can unintentionally exclude qualified people before they ever get the chance to tell their story.
Sometimes, creating a more inclusive workplace isn't about lowering standards, it's about removing unnecessary barriers.
At Career Edge, our staff use our RISE & SHINE approach to guide how we work with employers to identify practical ways to make hiring more inclusive while still finding the right fit for the role.
Because talent doesn't always look the way we expect. If your curious about inclusive hiring, connect with us today to learn how we can help!

Talking about yourself in an interview is where a lot of people get stuck, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. The key is to keep it simple and grounded in real experience.
Think about what you actually did and what the result was, rather than trying to sound perfect or overly rehearsed.
Use specific examples to bring your answers to life, and focus on impact. Don’t overcomplicate it, clear and honest is always better.
And like anything else, practice makes a huge difference the more you say it out loud before the interview!
If you need support, we can help you prepare for interviews and practice with mock interviews. Connect with us today!

One of the most common things we hear from job seekers is: "I thought I should be able to do this on my own."
Many people spend weeks or even months trying to figure everything out themselves before reaching out for support.
What we see every day is that asking for help isn't about capability. It's about having access to resources and a fresh perspective.
Job searching can feel overwhelming. Career changes can feel uncertain. Even experienced professionals can find themselves wondering what their next step should be.
That's why support matters. Sometimes a conversation helps you identify strengths you didn't recognize and sometimes it helps you explore opportunities you hadn't considered.
Sometimes it simply helps you feel less alone in the process!
We’re here to help you and you don’t have to wait, reach out today.

That willingness to work matters more than you might think. Many employers are looking for reliable, motivated people they can train and support, not just perfect resumes.
Our role is to help connect you with those opportunities and support you in showing your strengths in the best way possible.
You don’t have to do it alone. We believe in building experience, second chances and fresh starts too.

We created RISE & SHINE because we kept seeing a gap between talent and opportunity. Too often, skilled job seekers were being held back by barriers in hiring processes, not a lack of ability. At the same time, employers were being asked to hire more inclusively without always having the tools, guidance, or confidence to do so in practice
RISE & SHINE is the way we work. It is not a program.
It is the approach that guides how our staff support job seekers and employers every day.
It reflects the expertise of our team in:
• strengths-based employment coaching
• trauma-informed practice
• fair chance and inclusive hiring guidance
• practical, real-world employment support

At its core RISE & SHINE exists to bridge the gap between talent and opportunity by changing how support is delivered and how hiring decisions are made. Because when barriers are reduced and support is consistent, more people and businesses get the chance to succeed!

One of the most common reasons people hold back from applying for a job is because they don't meet every qualification listed in the posting.
They read the requirements and think: "I don't have enough experience." "I've never done that before." "Someone else is probably more qualified."
What we hear from employers, however, is often very different. Many employers are looking beyond technical skills. They're looking for people who are dependable, adaptable, eager to learn, and able to contribute to their team.
The reality is that very few candidates check every box. That's why it's important to focus on the skills, experiences, and strengths you do bring to the table.
Don't count yourself out before an employer has the chance to see your potential.

The best hiring decisions often start with asking better questions.
- Are we hiring for potential as well as experience?
- Would someone from a non-traditional background feel welcome applying here?
- What assumptions are we making before we even meet a candidate?
These aren't easy questions, but they're important ones!
Every hiring process is designed with good intentions, yet small decisions can unintentionally create barriers for talented candidates. By taking time to reflect on our hiring practices, we can create opportunities for people to be seen for their skills, potential, and what they can contribute today.
At Career Edge, we use RISE & SHINE to guide how we work with employers. It's our strengths-based, trauma-informed approach to supporting more inclusive, fair chance hiring practices.
What's one question your organization could ask itself to make hiring more inclusive?

A strong resume isn’t one-size-fits-all. It should match the job you’re applying for.
Make small, intentional tweaks to align your wording and skills with the job posting, and highlight what’s most relevant for that specific role. Remember, less is more when applying, focus your resume on the jobs you actually want instead of using a blanket approach across every vacancy.
Tailoring your resume shows employers you’ve made the effort, and it can significantly improve your chances of getting noticed!
We’re here to help build your resume, update it or help you match it to job postings. Connect with us today!
