FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dr. Nic Sparrow Awarded Honorary Fellowship in Trauma & Critical Care

Nelson, BC | January 23, 2026— KERPA is proud to announce that Dr. Nic Sparrow has been awarded an Honorary Fellowship in Trauma & Critical Care (FFTACC) by the ATACC Faculty Council, in recognition of his long-standing, dedicated, and influential contribution to trauma and critical care medicine.

The prestigious honour was approved by the ATACC Faculty Council following nomination and formal review, acknowledging Dr. Sparrow’s more than 15 years of leadership, education, and clinical excellence in trauma and critical care both locally and internationally.

The Fellowship is conferred by the Faculty of Trauma & Critical Care and is jointly accredited by The ATACC Group and the Royal College of Surgeons, London. Honorary Fellowships are awarded sparingly and recognise exceptional contributions to the field, with recipients granted Fellowship status without the standard examination process.

“It is a tremendous honour to see Dr. Sparrow recognised at this level by such a respected international faculty. This Fellowship reflects not only his clinical expertise, but his ongoing commitment to advancing emergency and trauma care for patients and communities.”

As a Fellow of the Faculty of Trauma & Critical Care, Dr. Sparrow is entitled to use the post-nominals FFTACC, participate in Diploma and Fellowship examinations, contribute as an examiner, and engage in ATACC educational events and activities worldwide.

KERPA congratulates Dr. Sparrow on this significant achievement, which highlights both his individual impact and the calibre of trauma and emergency care leadership serving the Kootenay region.

Hi, neighbours. After yesterday's lightning-sparked fire just above Beasley, it's been suggested that the fire department could do a better job of keeping the community informed. That's easier said than done sometimes, as fires are dynamic and often difficult to predict (and in the early stages we may be busy dealing with the situation from an operational standpoint), but we'll work on it. In this case, we were monitoring the situation but the fire was actioned by BC Wildfire as it was outside our jurisdictional boundaries.

There are some good sources of information already available for everyone, from prevention to preparedness to monitoring the status of wildfires, and we've compiled a list for you here.

The Beasley Fire Department is staffed by volunteers. They are well trained and ready to help 24/7, but the fire hall itself is not manned. To report an emergency situation to us, please call 911.

The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) is responsible for responding to wildfires on Crown land. To report a wildfire, call 1-800-663-5555 (or *5555 from a cell phone).
https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/safety/wildfire-status/contact-channels/report-a-wildfire

The BCWS Southeast Fire Centre (Arrow Fire Zone) has crews based close by, at Shoreacres. They have always been incredibly fast to respond to fires in our area when they have personnel available.

For information on the status of individual fires, current burn bans etc, please download the BCWS app:
https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/bc-wildfire-service/id1477675008
They update the information regularly, although there is some lag as it can't reasonably be done in real time.

The RDCK activates an Emergency Operations Centre whenever there is a major emergency or disaster, and will issue evacuation alerts and orders as needed.

It's a good idea to be signed up for emergency alerts through the Voyent Alert system.

Here's a good resource for emergency preparedness:

Information on current fire bans and burning requirements in the Southeast Fire Centre can be found here:

https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/environment/air-land-water/air/air-pollution/smoke-burning/regulations/openburningregulation
Note: currently only campfires 0.5 metres high by 0.5 metres wide - or smaller - are permitted.

And finally, it would be difficult to overstate how crucial it is for homeowners to focus on the critically important work of FireSmarting your home ignition zone. There are grants available to help with the cost.

Hopefully this information is helpful. Be vigilant, stay safe!
