Transgender Flag
The Transgender Flag was first created in 1999 by Monica Helms, a transgender woman. Light blue and pink are featured because they are the traditional colours associated with baby boys and girls, respectively. The white stands for those who are inters*x, transitioning or those who don´t feel identified with any gender.
Transgender people have a gender identity or gender expression that differs from the s*x that they were assigned at birth.

Happy National Indigenous Peoples Day! Today, we celebrate the amazing cultures, traditions, and history of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. Here in Pictou County, we are on Mi’kma’ki, which is the traditional territory of the Mi’kmaq people.

To build a fair world for everyone, we have to look at the whole picture. We can't talk about fairness for women without also talking about racism and colonialism. Sadly, Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people still face much higher rates of unfairness and violence today.

Indigenous women and leaders have always been at the frontlines, protecting their families, cultures, and the land. Their voices and leadership are incredibly powerful and important.

Today is a day to celebrate, but it is also a day to learn. As a community center, we promise to keep learning, listening, and working to be true allies. We are all connected by the treaties made on this land, and we all have a role to play in making things right. 🧡

On International Yoga Day, we are reflecting on what it truly means to care for ourselves and our communities. Wellness is not a luxury, a trend, or a one size fits all practice. It is a vital tool for resilience, healing, and reclaiming our bodies and minds.

True self-care must be accessible to everyone, regardless of age, physical ability, income, or background. That’s why we love our popular Chair Yoga program so much! It honours the core roots of yoga; mindfulness, breath, and presence while breaking down the physical and systemic barriers that often make traditional wellness spaces feel exclusive.

Yoga isn't about flexibility or expensive gear; it’s about creating a safe, gentle space to reconnect with ourselves, process, and find a moment of peace.

We hope everyone is taking a few moments to find their breath, practicing mindfulness, and are taking care of themselves and each other!💜

At the Pictou County Women’s Resource and S*xual Assault Centre, we are committed to fostering communities where everyone feels safe, valued, and respected. We proudly support Pictou County Pride and stand alongside members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, whose identities, experiences, and contributions deserve recognition and celebration.

Discrimination, harassment, hateful language, and attacks directed at members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community have no place on our social media platforms. We reserve the right to remove comments that are harmful, offensive, or discriminatory, and to block or report accounts that promote hatred, harassment, or violence.

Our social media spaces are an extension of our values. We are committed to creating environments rooted in dignity, inclusion, respect, and safety for all.

We stand with Pictou County Pride, with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, and with everyone working toward a more inclusive and equitable future.

To celebrate Pride Month, we are happy to feature the history of Pride Flags and will feature some of them over the next week. 🏳️‍🌈✨

Today, we are throwing it back to 1978 to celebrate the Gilbert Flag—the very first Rainbow Pride Flag, created by activist Gilbert Baker.

Before it became the 6-stripe flag we see everywhere today, the original flag actually had eight vibrant stripes, and every single colour stood for something powerful:

💗 Pink = S*x & Body Positivity

❤️ Red = Life

🧡 Orange = Healing

💛 Yellow = Sunlight

💚 Green = Nature

💙 Turquoise = Magic & Art

💜 Indigo = Serenity

🍇 Violet = Spirit

The original flag wasn't just a design; it was a vision for a world where all parts of our identities are celebrated.

Which of the original 8 colours resonates most with your activism today?
