Have you ever noticed how deer flies seem obsessed with vehicle mirrors?

Meet the Giant Lichen Orbweaver, one of the largest orb-weaving spiders in North America. These spiders spin the classic wheel-shaped webs we often discover the hard way while walking through the forest.

Its gray, white, and green coloration helps it blend perfectly into lichen-covered tree bark, making it almost invisible during the day. Despite its size, it’s completely harmless to people and spends its nights catching mosquitoes and other flying insects.

A few fun facts:
- Females can build webs several feet across.
- They usually spin their webs at night and often hide nearby rather than sitting in the middle.
- Their camouflage is so good that you can be looking right at one and never notice it.
- They’re an important natural pest controller in the forest.

I have to admit, they really are camouflage experts. I’ve walked through their webs many times without ever seeing the spider and only realizing it was there when I felt silk across my face. You can imagine the scream that followed echoed through the forest for kilometres.

And their webs are surprisingly strong. One appeared overnight between our cabin wall and a rock. I walked into it the next morning, stumbled, and nearly fell. At least, that’s the story I like to tell. 😉

Life is better at the cottage, but definitely best at the cabin 😉
This was a birthday gift from our neighbour when we were building the cabin, a teacup and a handmade blend of linden and oat straw tea. A perfect match for cabin life and all the relaxation that comes with it!

Not something we see every day in the northern woods. This was back in June 2021, while driving to the future cabin, even before a single board had been nailed down. Just one of the many reasons we fell in love with this place.

How do we wash our ATV off-grid?
Well… these dark clouds look promising.
Phase 1: Pre-wash
Phase 2: Main wash
Phase 3: Drying off in the evening sun
