Thrive Parents is a relaxed, welcoming space to connect with other families, share resources and talk honestly about what’s helping, especially as we head back to school.

Sometimes the sweetest reminders of what Family Place means happen in small, unexpected moments. 💛

One of our little friends has been coming to Family Playtime with her nanny for the past eight months. As she gets ready to return home to Europe, she made a special trip in today with flowers and a card for our team to say thank you.

It meant so much to our whole team!

Our daily drop-ins may look like play, snacks, songs and conversation, but underneath all of that, relationships are growing. Families come back week after week, children become comfortable in the space, and trust builds between caregivers, children and our team.

We get to know people and over time, Family Place becomes a place where people feel welcomed, cared for and connected.

We’re so grateful for the families and caregivers who let us be part of their lives, and for the reminder that these relationships mean just as much to our team, too.

Next week is one of our favourite Family Place traditions: our Annual Summer Picnic!

On Wednesday, August 26, we’re taking Family Place to Tipperary Park for a big shared picnic lunch, outdoor drop-in fun, time to visit and play together, and a very special send-off for the children in our community who are heading to Kindergarten this fall. 💛

Note that this picnic is for ALL Family Place families! You don’t need to have a child starting Kindergarten to come. We’d love to fill the park with familiar faces: babies, toddlers, preschoolers, siblings, parents/caregivers and celebrate the end of summer together. For our Kindergarten families, we’ll also gather for a special little ceremony to cheer your children on as they take this very big next step. Having the wider Family Place community there to celebrate them makes it even more meaningful.

At New West Family Place, our monthly Eat, Play, Love lunch is about more than sharing a meal.

Once a month, families stay a little longer after drop-in to gather around the table, share food and spend time together.
For children, shared meals create space to watch, explore, choose and participate at their own pace. They see other people enjoying different foods, practise everyday social routines, and experience mealtimes as something connected to belonging and community. For caregivers, it’s a chance to slow down, connect and share space with other families without pressure or expectation.

And because everyone is invited to bring something to the table, our lunch often reflects the foods, cultures, traditions and favourites of the families who make Family Place what it is. Food brings us together and belonging keeps us connected.

That’s the ❤️ in Eat, Play, Love. Join us next month!

Our Transition to Kindergarten workshops are underway and it’s been wonderful to see families coming together to ask questions, share experiences and feel more prepared for the big transition ahead.

This series grew out of something we heard directly from families: you wanted more support in knowing what to expect when your child starts Kindergarten. And there’s still time to join us! 🙌

Wednesday, August 19 | 7:00–9:00 p.m. "Parent Rights, Responsibilities & School Routines"

We’ll be joined by DPAC representative Laura for a practical conversation about navigating the school system, understanding your role as a parent or caregiver, and getting familiar with some of the routines and expectations that come with starting school.

Thursday, August 20 | 7:00-9:00 "Building Your Village"

Missed the first two workshops? That’s okay! Each session stands on its own, and new families are very welcome.

💰 Save money while discovering which toys truly interest your child
🏠 Enjoy more variety at home without adding permanent clutter

The Toy Lending Library is available through the New Westminster Public Library. All you need is a library card.

Starting kindergarten is a big step for children and for the grownups supporting them!

Our free Transition to Kindergarten Workshop Series is designed to help parents and caregivers feel more informed, connected and confident as their family prepares for this new chapter. Across four welcoming evening workshops, we will explore:

Support your child through separation, changing behaviour, new emotions and growing independence.

August 12 | A New Chapter: Preparing the Whole Family
Explore the hopes, worries and changes that can come with starting school—and practical ways to support your whole family.

August 19 | Rights and Responsibilities as Parents
Learn what to expect from kindergarten, how school communication works and how to build a positive partnership with your child’s school.

August 20 | Building Your Village
Strengthen connections with educators, other families and community supports that can help throughout the school year.

All workshops take place from 6:30–8:00 p.m. at Family Place Quayside, 112–960 Quayside Drive, New Westminster.
The series is free, with childminding and refreshments provided. Register for one workshop or join us for all four.

☁️ Share a Little Win ☁️

Not every success has to be big to be worth celebrating.

You may notice two new cloud-shaped boards on the training room doors, created by one of our wonderful summer students. These boards are a place for families to share the small moments that are working for them. Take a sticky note and jot down a little win from today or this week:

✨ “I made a meal my kiddo actually ate.”
✨ “We got out the door on time.”
✨ “I had 10 minutes of peace today.”
✨ “I asked for help when I needed it.”

At Family Place, celebrating with families is one of our core values. Sharing these everyday successes helps us notice what is going well, learn from one another, and remember that we are not navigating family life alone. It is also part of our HOPE learning, recognizing the strengths, possibilities and positive moments already present in our lives.

Add your little win the next time you visit, and take a moment to read what other families are celebrating too. Together, we can fill the clouds with hope. ☁️
