129 community-led projects are getting ready to take root across New Westminster. đź’›

This month, more than 100 Neighbourhood Small Grants project leads came through the doors of Family Place to collect their cheques, sign their agreements and find support for bringing their ideas to life.

This year, $61,024 in funding will support:

✨ 119 Neighbourhood Small Grants
✨ 10 Youth Neighbourhood Small Grants
✨ 99 community events and gatherings
✨ 65 skill-sharing projects
✨ 25 resource-sharing projects
✨ 11 art installations
✨ 8 gardening and greening projects

We were genuinely surprised, and so encouraged, by the turnout! The room was filled with neighbours sharing ideas, asking questions and preparing to create gatherings, workshops, gardens, cultural celebrations and other opportunities for connection throughout the city.

Project leads enjoyed food catered by Columbia Street Sandwich Company and received guidance from several generous local experts:
• Jen Arbo from the City of New Westminster, on using City spaces
• Gerrardo Corro from Tourism New West, on promoting events
• Joy St. John, on engaging volunteers and community support
• Jess Roca-Muncaster, a longtime project lead offering practical project guidance
We are grateful to each of them for sharing their time and knowledge.

We also want to thank our 2026 Neighbourhood Small Grants Committee. Members reviewed a record number of applications and approached some very challenging decisions with great care, thoughtfulness and commitment to the community.

This week, we had an opportunity to learn more about research into the impact of Neighbourhood Small Grants over the program’s 25+ year history. While the findings are not yet ours to share, the conversation reinforced that these grants create benefits well beyond a single event. Project leaders can build confidence, develop new skills, form relationships and feel more connected to their neighbourhoods.

And now, the projects begin.
We will be sharing public projects in our Facebook and Instagram Stories, displaying flyers in the Family Place window and adding events to our live community calendar.
Read the full story and see more photos on our website.https://www.newwestfamilies.ca/whats-happening/

Project leads hosting a public event are encouraged to send us their flyers and event information so we can help spread the word.

What does a non-profit director do? Dana recently had the chance to answer that question for a Grade 1 class at Skwo:wech Elementary!

As part of the school’s Community Helpers visits, Dana introduced herself as “Dana the Non-Profit Director” and shared a little about her role at New Westminster Family Place: from supporting our team and programs to helping create a welcoming place where local families can connect, find resources and feel supported.

The students sent her home with this adorable handmade card, which made the visit even more special. đź’›

Thank you to Skwo:wech Elementary for inviting Family Place into the classroom and giving students a glimpse into the many different ways people help their community.

We’re popping up at the Queensborough Children’s Festival!
Join us on Saturday, June 13 from 10:00 AM–3:00 PM at the Queensborough Community Centre for a full day of family fun.

New West Family Place will be there with a tent full of simple, playful activities for children and families, including LEGO, crafts, and some favourite Family Place-style fun. Come say hello, play for a while, and connect with us about programs, resources, and supports for families with young children.

The festival will also include entertainment, free panda rides, face painting/glitter tattoos, and handmade goods from young entrepreneurs.

A few helpful notes from the event organizers:

🌿 This is an eco-friendly event, so families are encouraged to bike, walk, or take public transit if possible. Parking is limited and available first come, first served in the neighbourhood and around nearby schools.

🥫 The Don’t Go Hungry Food Program will be on-site accepting non-perishable food and monetary donations.

Some parenting journeys come with extra questions, appointments, advocacy, and heart.

Thrive Parents is a welcoming support meet-up for parents and caregivers of children 0–12 who are neurodivergent, exploring a diagnosis, or needing additional support.

This evening group is a chance to connect with other parents, share what’s been coming up, ask questions, and leave feeling a little less alone.

Please note: this is an adults-only group and childminding is not available. We know that can be a barrier for families, and we warmly welcome those who are able to attend this month.

As a Family Resource Program, New West Family Place is often a place families come with questions:

Where can we go?
Who can help with this?
Is this normal?
Where do we even start?

In the playroom, in parenting programs and through our media channels, our team is always gathering local information, making connections, and sharing resources that can help families feel more supported in community.

Pacific Post Partum Support Society

“I chose this organization because perinatal mental health complications are incredibly common, affecting 1 in 5 new parents, yet so many caregivers still feel alone in this process. My hope is that every caregiver knows you are not alone, and you deserve to be held with as much tenderness and care as a newborn.”

Pacific Post Partum Support Society offers support for parents and families navigating the emotional realities of pregnancy, birth, adoption and early parenthood. Whether you are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, low, isolated, unlike yourself, or simply unsure what kind of support you need, you do not have to figure it out alone.

So many caregivers pour everything into caring for a baby. This is your reminder that caregivers need care too.
Save this for yourself or someone you love, and follow along for more Family Place Staff Picks.

What is one kind thing you wish you could tell your past self during those early newborn days? Share only what feels comfortable.

Sometimes the best feeling is realizing you don’t have to explain everything.

Thrive Parents Support Group is a relaxed evening just for parents/caregivers of neurodivergent kiddos to connect with others who understand the journey in all its complexity, humour, exhaustion, advocacy, and joy.

No child minding. No kids in the room. Just space for adults to talk, listen, share resources.
