A fire can take more than a home. It can take documents, belongings, stability, and a sense of security.
When the devastating Fourth Avenue apartment fire in New Westminster displaced approximately 30 seniors, our team stepped in to help them navigate the difficult journey from crisis to recovery. From replacing lost ID to securing benefits and housing supports, we're continuing to help rebuild lives one step at a time.

These services remain vital for seniors to stay safe, independent, and connected in the homes and communities they know and love. For many, support with meals, grocery shopping or light housekeeping made the difference between struggling alone and thriving with dignity.

We're proud of our accomplishments this past fiscal year, but numbers don't tell the whole story. Each statistic represents a vulnerable senior who turned to us for help, hope, and housing during a time of unimaginable stress. Together, these accomplishments tell a story of lives stabilized, crises prevented, and dignity restored.

Meet Logan, our summer student, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Social Work at UBC after completing a BA in Philosophy at SFU. He's been connecting with seniors receiving services like grocery and meal delivery, medical transportation, and light housekeeping to help them remain independent. When asked what he's learned from the experience, he shared:
“One of the greatest privileges of this experience has been connecting with seniors across our community through outreach. In those conversations, one message has stood out above all else: the critical importance of support services for older adults and the ongoing need for even greater assistance at every level.
So many of the seniors I've met are genuinely grateful for the support they receive, yet many are also facing challenges that require additional resources, advocacy, and connection. Seeing that reality firsthand has reinforced for me why this work matters and why there is always more we can do.
As someone entering the field of social work, I've come to believe that meaningful support begins with relationships. Building trust, respecting client autonomy, and centering each person's unique perspective and goals creates the foundation for effective and compassionate service. Every interaction is an opportunity to listen, learn, and ensure people feel seen and heard.
What has been especially inspiring is seeing these values put into practice every day by the team at Seniors Services Society of BC. Their commitment to dignity, respect, and person-centred support is evident in everything they do. Being part of that work has been both humbling and motivating, and it has strengthened my commitment to pursuing a career focused on supporting individuals and communities.
Thank you to everyone who has shared their stories with me this summer. Your experiences and perspectives have left a lasting impact.”
