Please share! May is Motorcycle Awareness Month. Our Traffic Unit would like to share a few tips:

Motorists please be alert and check your blind spots. Motorcyclists can be hard to see when changing lanes.

Motorcyclists please take steps to be seen. Neon is the new black.

Motorists please take extra care when turning left at intersections. Please double check your path is clear.

Motorcyclists - The money you spend on motorcycle safety gear is the best kind of insurance — it prevents injuries in the first place.

Motorists please give motorcyclists space. Motorcycles are legally entitled to their own lane of traffic. In no situation are you allowed to drive your automobile in the same lane and in close proximity to a motorcycle.

Stay safe and have fun out there!

At this morning’s Police Board meeting, we celebrated three individuals who truly make our department proud:

Drew Hart was honoured as he concludes four years of dedicated service on the Police Board. Chief Hyland was recognized for completing 30 years of exemplary service, and Sergeant Mula was celebrated for her recent Ally Award from the BCWLE.

It’s a great reminder that it’s our people- with their commitment, leadership, and heart that are the foundation of our department's success.

Today marks the beginning of National Police Week! Our members put their lives on the line 24/7/365 and are the community and its residents. Public safety involves a collaborative effort within police agencies, between police services, and between the police, other first responders, social and community services, as well as residents. This week, the New Westminster Police Department renews its oath to be the citizens in our region as we work together towards a better and safer future for all.

On May 6 at approximately 11:00pm the New Westminster Police Department received a 9-1-1 call from someone describing a woman being slashed with a knife. The caller shared that two men were fleeing the scene and they provided descriptions of the suspects. Officers rushed to the New Westminster SkyTrain station to provide aid to the woman who was found with a laceration.

Within minutes, officers located two men matching the suspect descriptions on Columbia Street. When officers called out to the men, they split up and ran in different directions. After two foot pursuits the suspects quickly found themselves in police custody. One of the suspects was found to be in possession of a loaded handgun, drugs, and several thousands of dollars of counterfeit currency.

“We’d like to thank the caller who made the decision to call 9-1-1,” stated Media Relations Officer Sergeant Andrew Leaver. “Anyone can make the choice to be an active bystander and help victims of crime by relaying important information about what you’re seeing to police.”

The victim was transported to hospital by BC Emergency Health Services Paramedics. At this stage in the investigation, it is unclear what relationship, if any, exists between the victim and the suspect.

The New Westminster Police Department is welcoming its first Accredited Facility Dog, PADS Sokka, to support victims during investigations and court proceedings. Sokka has been placed with NWPD through Pacific Assistance Dogs Society (PADS) and is trained to provide comfort and emotional support to victims of crime.

Sokka’s primary role will be to assist victims as they navigate the justice system, including attending interviews and providing support during testimony in court. Accredited Facility Dogs receive two years of training to work in professional settings and are handled in a way that supports both the needs of the victim and the integrity of the investigation.

“Coming forward and sharing what happened can be one of the most difficult parts of an investigation,” said Sergeant Andrew Leaver, Media Relations Officer. “Sokka is here to help people feel supported during those moments so they can focus on telling their story.”

When not supporting victims, Sokka will also be available to support the wellness of sworn and civilian members following difficult calls or critical incidents. This addition reflects NWPD’s continued focus on trauma-informed policing and supporting both the community and its staff. The New Westminster Police Department would like to extend gratitude to each team member at PADS who played a part in preparing Sokka for this important work.
