📣 From Ideas to Action: A 6-Week Community Advocacy Workshop Series

John Howard Society of York Region is pleased to be one of the co-facilitators of this six-week workshop series, hosted by SMCAТ South Markham CAT and the Institute for Change Institute for Change Leaders Leaders.

Join this journey through storytelling, advocacy, relationship-building, strategy and teamwork. Together, participants will explore how to turn their ideas into meaningful community action and strengthen their voices as advocates for change.

The Indian Boarding Homes Class Action is hosting a free virtual information session for individuals who were placed in boarding homes to attend school between September September 1, 1951 and June 30, 1992 and may be eligible for compensation.

Community support makes a real difference! ❤️

We extend our sincere appreciation to our staff member, David.B, and his congregation at The Harbour The Harbour for generously collecting and donating a large supply of winter essentials for our clients. Their thoughtful donation - comprising tents, tarps, hand warmers, personal hygiene items, and other critical resources - will significantly assist individuals in our community with remaining safe, warm, and equipped during the winter months. 🏕️🧤

We are grateful for the generosity and compassion shown by David and the congregation. Community partnerships like this play an important role in helping us support individuals and families across York Region.

By volunteering at Newmarket Bingo World, we were able to support 86 new clients in 2025-2026 through our Reintegration Program. We also extended assistance to 56 clients from the previous reporting period who continued to need support. Additionally, we provided over 45 drop-in court support to newly released individuals seeking guidance with shelter, property retrieval and navigation support.

🎉 Ambassador Spotlight: Celebrating Our JHSYR Ambassadors at Our Annual General Meeting! 🎉

Our recent John Howard Society of York Region Annual General Meeting was a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the past year, celebrate our collective achievements, and recognize the contributions of those who help strengthen our community.

We were especially proud to recognize our JHSYR Ambassadors for their dedication and valuable contributions to community outreach throughout the year. Our Ambassadors have played an important role in helping JHSYR build connections, raise awareness, and engage with communities across York Region.

As part of the AGM, our Ambassadors were recognized for their work and presented with certificates of appreciation in recognition of their time, commitment, and contributions. We are grateful for everything our Ambassadors bring to JHSYR and look forward to continuing to grow our outreach and community connections together.

🌟 Ambasssador Spotlight: Community Veterinary Outreach (CVO) Pet Clinic 🌟

Our Ambassador Elena, together with JHSYR staff, recently supported the Community Veterinary Outreach (CVO) Pet Clinic! 🐶🐱. CVO helps community members and their pets by providing veterinary care and connecting people with additional health and community resources. ❤️

JHSYR was happy to support the event both behind the scenes and through community outreach. We had the opportunity to connect with pet owners, share information, and help community members learn about available resources and supports through John Howard Society of York Region programs.

A special thank you to Elena for volunteering her time and helping create a welcoming space for conversations and connections. Our ambassadors play an important role in helping JHSYR stay connected to the community and ensuring people know that support is available.🤝

Behind every person is a human being who deserves to be seen, heard and supported through evidence-based case management. At John Howard Society of York Region, we strive to provide programming and supports to our community that reflect the dignity and humanity we all deserve.

September is National Recovery Awareness Month, and we’re proud to partner with and several of our community partners this month to show that Your Region Cares. Together, we’re raising awareness about drug overdoses, highlighting harm reduction and recovery resources, and reminding our community that help is available.
