🌟 Ambasssador Spotlight: Community Appreciation BBQ 🍖🔥 🌟

Last week, the John Howard Society of York Region hosted our Community Appreciation BBQ 🍔🌭 - wonderful afternoon of connection, conversation, and community!

We were happy to have our Ambassadors Carrie, Jim, and Rudolph, along with our JHSYR staff, come out and support the event. Their energy, teamwork, and willingness to connect with community members helped make the afternoon feel welcoming and enjoyable for everyone. 🤝💛

Events like this are about more than just coming together - they are a chance to meet new people, share helpful resources, and build stronger connections within our community.

A big thank you to our JHSYR staff and Ambassadors for showing up, getting involved, and helping make the day special! 👏

International Overdose Awareness Day is the world's largest annual campaign to end overdose. It is to remember those who have lost their lives and acknowledge the impact of overdose on victims, families, and communities. This campaign provides the opportunity to reduce the stigma surrounding overdose and learn about the signs of opioid poisoning. On this day, we are called to raise awareness about overdose prevention, support evidence-based approaches to substance use and harm reduction, and recognize the importance of compassion, understanding, and connection in saving lives.

World Humanitarian Day – August 19

World Humanitarian Day recognizes the dedication and courage of humanitarian workers who provide life-saving assistance to individuals and communities affected by conflict, disasters, and crises around the world. This year, the central message is "the time for concern is over. The time for consequence is now." On August 19, 2026, we are called to act upon our concerns, not only acknowledging the tragedies of past events, but also committing to helping others and raising awareness of the importance of compassion, solidarity, and collective action in overcoming obstacles and barriers within and between communities.

International Youth Day – August 12

International Youth Day raises awareness for challenges youth around the world are subject to, as well as celebrating their role as partners in achieving sustainable development. This year, International Youth Day is observed with the theme, "Different Contexts, Common Aspirations," which recognizes that while the lives of youth are different around the world, their aspirations are remarkably similar. The focus is on youth in Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs), and Small Island Developing States (SIDS), who experience several challenges including poverty, geographic isolation, and limited economic opportunities. It recognizes and encourages unshakeable resilience, leadership, and innovation in advancing the development in their communities.

As part of our ongoing ambassador outreach efforts, our ambassadors had the opportunity to visit a local community agency in York Region, learn more about the services they offer, and strengthen connections within the community.

These visits are a valuable opportunity to discover new resources, build meaningful partnerships, and exchange information about Service Navigator and other John Howard Society of York Region (JHSYR) programs.

By building stronger connections with community organizations, our ambassadors help expand awareness of available supports and ensure individuals and families can connect with the resources they need. 🤝💙

International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples – August 9

International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the rich cultures, histories, languages, and contributions of all indigenous peoples around the world, including First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.

This year, this day is celebrated with the theme, "Honouring Indigenous Midwives: Safeguarding Life and Well-being." It is an opportunity to recognize the role of Indigenous midwives as knowledge holders and caregivers; individuals who ensure the continuity of Indigenous Peoples' ways of life. Despite the importance of their roles, Indigenous midwifery remains impacted by structural barriers and discrimination.

Therefore, we are called not only to remember the histories and contributions but also reflect on the ongoing impacts of colonization and reaffirm our shared commitment to truth, reconciliation, and advancement of Indigenous rights.
