Brooklyn Volunteer Fire Department

Brooklyn Volunteer Fire Department This is for all the members, past members, future members, neighboring departments and anyone else. This Fire Department is in Brooklyn, Hants Co, NS

As a fully volunteer fire department, we depend on the citizens of the fire protection district for their feedback and comments to help us give them better service during time's of need. We constantly train to better ourselves and the services we provide. The average number of hours that members contribute is 120 hours per year. We offer the medical first response to our residents, some of the area

s we service are classed as remote areas and we have been on scene approximately 20 to 30 minutes before the ambulance. In some of the areas we service the ambulance arrives just before us, we will assist the paramedics in the service they provide. We provide vehicle extrication during motor vehicle crashes. You can depend on the members of this department to provide a speedy yet safe extrication. We have won the Atlantic vehicle extrication competition in 2007 and 2008. We have one of the oldest junior programs in the province. Since 1981 we have been producing top notch firefighters for the future. Half of the officers and many of the current firefighters have come through the junior program. We respond to an average of 225 emergency calls per year. 40-50% are medical in nature, 35% are motor vehicle crashes and mutual aids to other fire departments, the rest are fire related. The fire protection area that we cover is over 480 square kilometers, around 2000 homes and 5000 people. The Brooklyn Volunteer Fire Department was established in 1962 by a group of men who had the dedication and enthusiasm that still exists today as two of those founding fathers still contribute their time to the fire department auxiliary. We are always looking for the residents to join and become part of an elite team, 25% of our fire fighting force is women. You are not required to have some form of training before you join, we will provide the training to perform the task required. There is a job for everyone to do, not everyone is an interior fire attack firefighter. We have a medical membership for those interested in that field, they respond to medical emergencies and provide rehabilitation to others on large scale emergencies. Thank you to all who have supported the fire department over the many years and the years to come. Stop by the fire station when driving by, pick up an application or take a tour. We take great pride in being your fire department, unfortunately we cannot stop or prevent the emergencies that happen, we do our best to help. For those citizen's who pick on or critize the efforts of firefighters, consider who you call when help is needed. Sincerely,

Mark Dearman
Chief

Earlier this month, several members of Brooklyn FD and Canadian Mountain Rescue Team completed their Swift Water Rescue Technician Level 4 Advanced course.

The intense, physically demanding, 7 day course included many hours of swimming and swift water rescue techniques, combined with low and high angle rescue.

Brooklyn FD and Canadian Mountain Rescue Team now have around 40 rescuers trained to this level.

Great work by all! Teamwork makes the dream work!
