Emotional regulation is part of overall and it's important to consider a child's executive functioning age when setting expectations and giving consequences.

Are we expecting too much of our children emotionally?

We often expect children to stay calm, make good choices, manage disappointment, cope with change, and express their feelings appropriately… even though the parts of the brain responsible for emotional regulation are still developing.

Emotional regulation isn’t something children simply “have”—it’s a skill that grows over many years through brain development, life experiences, and thousands of moments of co-regulation with safe, responsive adults.

When we understand what children are capable of at different ages, we can replace unrealistic expectations with support that helps them build lifelong emotional resilience.

Today’s visual explores how emotional regulation develops from infancy through adolescence.

If you keep getting sick, have chronic pain, or you just feel so exhausted and don’t know why— sometimes it’s because your nervous system has been beyond threshold for weeks, months, or years.

All of us have a different level of nervous system capacity. Some of us go into crowds and immediately feel over stimulated. Some of us go into crowds and feel alive and relaxed and open. When we don’t know what our capacity is, our nervous system can be past our threshold. It’s natural for us to have periods in life where we go past threshold. But, we also need to practice bringing the nervous system back to our “green” zone or what’s called ventral vagal.

The best way to do this is to:

1. Put yourself in a place where you feel safe. For most people that’s a cozy couch or bedroom. Environment signals to your nervous system it’s reset time.

2. If you can, make it cool: You don’t want be overheated. You also want to be able to place blankets around you and be as comfortable as possible.

3. Use airplane mode: put your phone on airplane mode or do not disturb. Don’t worry about answering emails or phone calls/texts for a few hours. If someone might get worried just shoot them a text that you’re taking some down time.

4. Zone out: dissociation gets a bad rap. Dissociation is an issue when it’s chronic or keeps you from connecting in your relationships. Intentionally zoning out gives your thinking mind a break. Read or listen to a fiction book, watch your favorite show or movie. Do whatever makes you feel relaxed and calm.

Nervous system hygiene is one of the most important things you can do for your physical and emotional health.

If you practice this you’ll feel less irritable, more grateful for people in your life, and much better at knowing when your nervous system is begging for a break

Beautiful way to look at life.

Life gets clearer when you learn where to focus and when to start again.

Life is like a camera. What you focus on shapes what you see. When your attention stays on the wrong things, everything feels blurry and overwhelming. But when you choose what truly matters, your perspective sharpens and your days begin to feel more meaningful.

Capture the good times while they are here. The laughs, the small wins, the quiet moments that bring peace. These are the memories that carry you when life feels heavy. Do not rush past them. Pause. Be present. Let joy live fully instead of saving it for later.

Develop from the negatives. Hard moments are not wasted moments. Pain teaches lessons that comfort never could. Growth happens when you reflect instead of resent, when you learn instead of quit. Even the darkest frames can shape a stronger version of you.

And if things do not work out, take another shot. Life does not end because one plan failed. You are allowed to try again with more wisdom, more clarity, and more courage. Adjust your focus, trust the process, and keep moving forward. The next picture might be the one that changes everything.
