Your Nipawin Firefighters have been a busy bunch as of late! Thursday May 28th 08:18 am crews were called to a vehicle fire west of Codette. Friday morning May 29th NFD were once again honoured to be part of the PARTY program at LP Miller HS alongside our fellow responders. That afternoon at 15:34 two separate events came in for brush fires on opposite sides of the river. One along the ditch of Hwy 55 east of White Fox, the other behind North Fringe/Rehaluk Honey Farms on top of the riverbank. The ditch fire was able to be tackled rather quickly, but the Riverbank fire proved to be a monstrous incident that required mutual aid from Carrot River Fire, SPSA Wildland firefighters, an air drop from two air tankers, helicopter support as well as countless efforts from landowners. This fight stretched into Saturday with flare ups occurring constantly in the incredibly hot, dry windy conditions. After a brief reprieve, Sunday May 31st 15:41 NFD were called out to a brush pile on fire west of Pontrillas. Thanks to the quick thinking on the callers part we were able to contain this small fire before it blew away out of control. June 1st 14:31 were once again summoned for a field fire just past the bridge in the RM of Torch River.

8 separate events were recorded in that time and we are so incredibly grateful to say that no injuries occurred in any of them! NFD would also like to apologize for the inconvenience to those in the Regional Park for the evacuation as well as the traffic control measures in the area. These precautionary measures were enacted as the riverbank fire was running wild and was on a direct path to the park gates!

NFD currently sit at 80 calls for the year which is slightly down from 2025’s record breaking tally. We look forward to the forecasted rain this week!

As is so often the case, whenever we say we are prepared and ready for things to get busy, the Fire Gods mock us and nothing happens. Then when we breathe a sigh of relief…well, take a guess! The May long weekend is the first and generally busiest holiday of the summer. After playing it up we ended up with one MVC. This PAST weekend however; Saturday May 23rd 17:41 NFD were called out to a camper on fire in Pontrillas. Sunday May 24th 15:03 Nipawin Fire responded to a medical call in Town. While on this scene a second call came in for a power line down and brush fire. Crews responded en masse while FC remained patient side. Finally during clean up from the first fire a third call for a ditch fire just past the bridge came in at 19:08. Luckily the landowner had been able to stop the spread before NFD arrived. In fact, he did such a good job FireChiefPaul drove right past scene! ( there’s an eye exam in someone’s near future, that or he couldnt see over the dash of the Command truck, theres a lot of material to work with here folks ) This leaves us at 69 calls for the year.

On Wednesday, May 13th at 12:29, Nipawin Fire Department were dispatched to a bale fire northeast of White Fox in the RM of Torch River. Engine 3 and Tanker 1 with a crew of 9 firefighters responded. On arrival, approximately a dozen burning bales were found. Prior to that, landowners had managed to separate a few bales by pulling/pushing with a tractor and using bucket brigades, but were forced to retreat due to smoke and mechanical difficulties. Suppression was ongoing while firefighters unrolled the straw to prevent fire from getting into the centre of the bales. While Tanker 1 was returning to Nipawin to refill a second call came for a brush fire south of Boughen Nurseries . Crews dropped their hoses and started to the second fire. On arrival to scene 2, the landowner and neighbours had managed to stop the spread before NFD started to saturate the area . Engine 3 returned to the original scene when a THIRD call came in for an in town smoke investigation. Engine 1 and in town standby officers started to search the area and were joined by the returning Tanker. Crews combed the area but it was determined to be a false alarm and members returned to the hall to refill, restock and wash up. All units were back in service just before 16:00.
And yes that is snow in the last picture! Even though it may be wet on the ground the grass and branches above are bone dry!

Monday April 20th NFD took advantage of the break between previous and impending Spring snowstorms to perform some apparatus pumper training . Engines 1,2,3 and Tanker 1 along with 16 firefighters set up shop behind the local CO-OP to perform evolutions. Since we were working with foam, firefighters took the opportunity to wash the Command truck!

This last burst of winter claimed a few “casualties” in the form of two MVC’s. (Please note “casualties” is in quotation marks as there were no injuries in either, its meant metaphorically.)

April 7th 13:50 as the storm was rolling in NFD were dispatched to an MVC on highway 35 in Codette. Visibility and road conditions were rapidly deteriorating as the storm made its way through.

April 8th 17:54 NFD were alerted to a 2 vehicle MVC at the intersection of 7th Avenue and 5th Street west. Although the sun was shining and it was quite warm out the road conditions were still less than ideal after the large dump of snow.

Once again very happy to report there were no injuries in either incident!

Nipawin Fire remind all drivers to take extra precautions during these thaw/freeze/melt/refreeze sessions until Mother Nature decides to finally unleash Spring!

Wishing everyone a safe and Happy Easter! 🐣
