NBRHC among the first in the world to give patients safe, clinician-approved AI support around the clock

Some surgical patients at NBRHC now have access to 24/7 clinician approved AI support through the recent launch of Seamless Answers – a conversational AI feature within the SeamlessMD platform. This launch places NBRHC among a small group of health systems worldwide offering patients a safe, clinician-approved AI assistant as part of their care.

SeamlessMD is an education tool that has been customized by NBRHC to provide surgical patients with the information needed to prepare for, and recover from, surgery at our Health Centre. SeamlessMD is currently available for ten surgical pathways, including orthopedics, urology, general surgery, women’s, and pediatrics.

On Indigenous Peoples Day, NBRHC wants to recognize the incredible contributions of the Mînowacihewin (Mino) Team.

This patient program acknowledges Indigenous Peoples’ ancestry, and honours and supports their lineage of coming from a culture with a distinct world view. The team works to improve access to traditional and culturally safe care by bringing Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and healing into all aspects of care for both inpatients and outpatients.

Mîno will take a wholistic approach to well-being that addresses mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health through the integration of both traditional practices and western medicine.

You can ask for the Mîno team to be involved in your care at any time, whether during a hospital stay or while attending an appointment.

Did you know NBRHC has a Gender Diversity Clinic at our 50 College Drive location in North Bay?

Pictured is the registration area and some of the team members you may see during your visit. (From L-R: back: Diana Spicer - Department Secretary; Angela MacAlpine- RN; front: Krista Gibson- Clinical Manager; Dr. Benjamin Cassidy-Psychiatrist; Shriya Vashisht- Psychometrist).

This clinic provides outpatient gender-affirming psychiatric and primary care supports to patients who are questioning or have come to understand that their gender identity differs from the one assigned to them at birth.

Our clinic sees patients of all ages from northeastern Ontario—our care team has expertise supporting children, youth and adults.

We provide assessments and tailored gender-affirming care recommendations related to gender identity, expression and transition goals for all ages. We can also provide gender-affirming hormone therapy to eligible patients without a primary care provider able to offer this care.

To become a patient at the clinic, patients can be referred by a health care provider (physician or nurse practitioner) with an OHIP billing number (the referral does not need to be from a patient’s family doctor).

For more information visit our website https://nbrhc.on.ca/.../regional.../gender-diversity-clinic/

06/01/2026

As we recognize Pride Month across Canada in June, we know that raising a flag is not enough. Pride is an important time for reflection, accountability and action.

For us at NBRHC, Pride Month is an opportunity to reflect on our responsibility to create safer and more inclusive care environments for every person we serve.

Historically, health care systems have not always served 2SLGBTQIA+ communities in ways that felt safe, respectful or affirming. Many individuals avoid seeking care because they fear discrimination or have had negative experiences accessing health care. We recognize that we have work to do and must commit to do better.

This month, we are launching voluntary pronoun stickers for staff, physicians, and volunteers who wish to share their pronouns. This initiative is intended to help foster respectful interactions and create a more welcoming environment.

We are also in the early stages of working with our regional hospital partners to improve how patient information is collected and displayed within our systems. Our goal is to help reduce experiences where patients are being misnamed, misgendered, or having personal information represented inaccurately during care. More information will be shared when the initiative goes live.

An important part of the work in this space is learning directly from the communities we serve. Health care experiences can have a lasting impact (both positive and negative) and we are committed to listening and learning so we can continue to improve.

If you are a member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and comfortable sharing your experiences accessing care, we invite you to connect with us at [email protected]. Your feedback will help inform this work and support our ongoing efforts to create safer, more respectful, and inclusive care environments for everyone.

Pride Month reminds us that inclusion is ongoing work. We are committed to listening, learning, and advancing meaningful action to help ensure everyone feels seen, respected, and safe when accessing care at the NBRHC.

We’re proud partners of this initiative!

It is very important that we find ways to help people in crisis receive the support they need in the right place, from the right provider, the first time. Having trained professionals respond who can help de-escalate a situation and get people connected to the right service in the community without having to always bring them to the Emergency Department is a win-win.

***
