Intro to Clay | Friday Mornings

The second of our two Intro to Clay classes being offered this fall will take place on Friday mornings. This beginner-level course offers an introduction to several of the fundamentals of working with clay, including both handbuilding and wheel throwing, as well as trimming, glazing, and good studio practices.

Classes run Friday mornings from 10:00 AM–1:00 PM, September 4 through October 23. There are eight classes in total, with space for up to eight participants, ages 18 and over.

Class cost is $452 plus hst which includes 20 lbs of clay, a beginner tool kit and all firing and glazing costs. Guild members receive a discounted rate of $452.00 which includes hst.

Classes will take place at our new studio location at 123 Delaware Ave., the former Voyageur Inn.

We’ve got some upcoming Intro to Clay classes in the works that will begin this fall. There will be both morning and evening options planned for September and October.

It is with sincere regret and sadness as our Guild sadly mourns the loss of one of our founding members. Keith Campbell, master potter, educator and mentor has passed away at the age of 79. The Guild would foremost like to express sincere condolences to his family.

Keith held the position of Program Director, instructor and Artist in Residence Emeritus for the Ceramic Program at Canadore College. When Keith retired in 2012 and the Ceramics program was closed, he took on the initiative to transfer the legacy of the program to create a local Potters Guild. With the help of many enthusiastic potters and three years of work and planning, the North Bay & Area Potters' Guild opened in May of 2015. Keith was the first President and Lifetime member of the Guild. In 2016, after stepping down from the Board of the Guild, he became an invaluable instructor, mentor to members and most importantly was the Guild's link to the larger arts community of North Bay. In 2017, we had the honour of celebrating Keith’s 50th anniversary of working in clay.

Keith was a highly skilled and creative artist. Keith was a raconteur, a political historian as well as a satirist, and is highly respected in the art world. He not only created his own art but contributed to arts communities. Keith’s willingness to share his vast experience in clay and his enthusiasm to support any and all opportunities for our Guild to join in the broader artistic community were invaluable in our early days to establish our place in the Ontario community of pottery guilds. We continue that legacy and will always be grateful to Keith for his dedication to his craft and to our Guild. His excellence, not only in his craft but also as a kindness and generosity, is an ongoing inspiration to members, and we are proud to have shared the love of clay with Keith.

Keith will be missed. He had the ability to leave an indelible impression; from long-time students to his friends and associates, his kindness and laughter, patience and care always shone through.
