Nipissing University Social Welfare and Social Development

Nipissing University Social Welfare and Social Development This page is dedicated to the Department of Social Welfare and Social Development at Nipissing University in North Bay, Ontario, Canada.

Welcome to Social Welfare and Social Development on Facebook! This Nipissing University program focuses on social inequality and the groups that have been underrepresented in the distribution of resources, opportunities, and power. The Honours Specialization prepares students to graduate with the skills they need to participate effectively in society as citizens and workers who have an understandi

ng of the social, political, economic, and cultural context of social welfare and social development. They will be able to analyze research findings, appraise social policies and programs, and contribute to social change towards equality and justice. They will also be prepared to engage in graduate education or second degree programs in related fields. See the promotional video:

The Social Welfare and Social Development Department would like to congratulate our student Atlas Gifford for winning one of the 2025 Dave Marshall Leadership Awards!

This is no small feat!

“Atlas Gifford is an exceptionally conscientious student, a critical thinker, and a devoted learner. As a student in the Social Welfare & Social Development program, Atlas has produced insightful analyses on topics such as Indigenous conceptualizations of self-government in relation to the land, the role of non-violence in Indigenous struggles, and meeting the diverse health needs of the q***r community. These analyses have been skillfully presented both in well-written academic assignments and through eloquent public speeches.

Beyond the classroom, Atlas excels as a community organizer. Especially impactful for Atlas was their key role in organizing the recent Aanjibimaadisiwin Symposium, an intellectually significant event addressing Indigenous approaches to gender-based violence and healing.

Atlas also organized an art exhibition that toured North Bay, Temagami, and Toronto, featuring works from the Q***r Up North residency initiative. Additionally, they founded and managed a print and digital magazine created by and for non-binary individuals. This initiative included a successful Kickstarter campaign and produced five print issues distributed to over 15 countries.

Atlas advises new Lakers to take charge of their own educational experience. Go into your courses and your experiences with a goal of what you want to get out of it, and it will drastically improve your academic experience. Consistency, listening, and showing up are key to success.

Atlas plans to pursue their Master of Environmental Studies at Nipissing. They hope to continue to use primary research and arts-based practices to explore their interests. Atlas’ goal is to work in the non-profit sector, and they aspire to teach at the college/university level.

Nipissing University proudly recognizes Atlas with a Dave Marshall Leadership Award in the Academic category.”

The Social Welfare & Development Society held its End-of-Year Social on Friday, April 12th, at NUSU Student Centre. This was an emotional event for everyone, and for many reasons. The dedicated hard work of the new SW & SD Society executive (Aurora; Atlas; Bhavika) allowed to start the Association again, and this despite their very busy semester, final exams, and term papers due. This was no small feat. We were also celebrating the end of the term. However, with great regrets, this was also a moment where we had to highlight the departure of Dr. Serena Kataoka, due to the non-renewal of her contract as a limited term appointment at Nipissing, for more than 10 years! Everyone wanted to underline the immense contribution and profound impact Dr. Kataoka had on everyone, students and colleagues at the Department and in North Bay community at large. We all agreed, this is not a goodbye, but a see you soon for new projects ahead, and best wishes in your new journey. We will never be far.

SWLF Update

In March, at Nipissing University's Undergraduate Research Conference 2024, two of our students won best panel presentation. They are Atlas Gifford, with their presentation on "Art in Everyplace: an Ethnographic Study of Art Fix Nipissing", and Aurora Buckley for her presentation on "A Comparative analysis of Ontario Universities’ policies and Programming for Students with dependent Children". Another testimony to the quality work students deliver, and the quality of research education our department provides. So proud of you ! Well done again ! .artsci .alum
