Wildfire preparedness isn’t just about protecting your own home; it’s about helping create a safer, more resilient community.

This week, take a look beyond your property line and consider how you can help reduce wildfire risk in your neighbourhood:

🏠 Keep shared spaces, sidewalks and driveways clear of dry leaves and vegetation
🏠 Talk with your neighbours about wildfire preparedness
🏠 Check on friends, family or neighbours who may need extra support during an emergency
🏠 Know your evacuation routes and stay informed about local emergency information

FireSmart Friday: Could You Leave on a Moment's Notice?

Wildfires can change quickly. Having a plan before an emergency means you'll spend less time scrambling and more time staying safe.

This week, take 15 minutes to:

• Review your household emergency plan with all members of the family
• Pack or update your grab-and-go bag (include pets in your plan)
• Gather important documents and medications
• Know your evacuation routes

FireSmart Friday: Protect Your Home, Starting at Your Doorstep

When it comes to wildfire preparedness, the area closest to your home matters most.
The first 1.5 metres around your home is known as the Immediate Zone, an area where small changes can help reduce the risk of wind-blown embers igniting your property.

This week, take a walk around your home and look for simple FireSmart improvements:

🔥 Remove dry leaves, pine needles and other debris from around your home, deck, stairs and entrances
🔥 Clean gutters, roofs and exterior vents to remove built-up combustible materials
🔥 Move firewood, patio furniture, propane tanks and other combustible items away from the side of your home

Wildfire preparedness starts long before smoke is in the air. Taking small steps today can help protect your home, your family and our community.

🚫 Never throw a cigarette butt on the ground, into vegetation, or out of a vehicle.

Even when a cigarette appears to be extinguished, the heat can remain and ignite dry grass, leaves or other combustible materials.

📍 In the City of North Vancouver, smoking is prohibited in City parks, plazas, public spaces, the Spirit Trail and Green Necklace. Cigarette waste is also one of the most common forms of litter found on our streets, parks and trails.
‼️Fire Bylaw 5.3(c) - $500 fine for disposing of any lighted or extinguished cigarette

✅ If you smoke:
• Fully extinguish your cigarette
• Use a proper ashtray or cigarette receptacle
• Never toss it onto the ground or into vegetation
• Never throw cigarette butts from a vehicle

Cooking fires can happen quickly, often when we are distracted or step away for just a moment. Staying alert while cooking and following a few simple safety steps can help prevent a fire before it starts:

‣ Never leave cooking appliances unattended. If you need to leave the kitchen, turn off the stove or oven first.
‣ Keep anything that can burn, including towels, paper products, and packaging, away from heat sources.
‣ Clean cooking surfaces and appliances regularly to prevent grease buildup.
‣ Keep children and pets a safe distance away from cooking areas. Create a no-go zone of 3 feet/1 meter.

If a fire grows or you are unsure, you can safely put it out, get out, stay out, and call 9-1-1.

The North Vancouver City Fire Department will be at Ray Perrault Park from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM for our final Hot Summer Nights event of the season.

Come meet our Fire Prevention team and C.A.P.S. volunteers, explore a fire truck, learn about fire and public safety, and pick up resources to help keep your family safe year-round.

Thank you to everyone who joined us throughout the summer. We look forward to ending the season with another great evening in the community.

Camp Ignite 2026 Spotlight — Meet Holly

We are proud to have Holly representing the North Vancouver City Fire Department at Camp Ignite 2026!

Holly has been involved with the North Shore Girls Soccer Club since she was five years old and has been a dedicated member of Girl Guides since Sparks.
Holly has a strong interest in the fire service and is excited to attend Camp Ignite, where she hopes to gain hands-on firefighting experience and meet like-minded young women who share her passion.

Camp Ignite is a three-night, three-day camp that educates and inspires young women to follow their dreams. We aim to show our campers a future of limitless opportunities and demonstrate that anything is possible.

A large part of what makes Camp Ignite successful is the mentorship offered by fire service women from throughout the province. We have a large group of women who donate their time and energy to guide and support the participants.

We can't wait to see all that she accomplishes at Camp Ignite. Good luck, Holly!
