🔋 That’s a wrap on Fire Prevention Week! 🚒

A huge thank you to the North Vancouver community, our local schools, and our business partners for making this week an incredible success.

From our regional features on Global BC to presenting to over 700 Grade 6 and 7 students across North Vancouver city elementary schools, our team has been working hard to spread the word about home fire safety.

A special shout-out to:

* The 300+ residents who joined us at The Shipyards on Saturday to talk micro mobility, e-bikes, and battery safety. 🚲

* Our 6 local City e-bike retailers who welcomed our information and trained their staff, and are now distributing critical battery safety handouts directly to buyers. 🔌

This Thanksgiving, cook with care.

With extra food on the stove and more activity in the kitchen, it’s easy for distractions to happen. Stay nearby while cooking, keep flammable items away from the stovetop, and keep pot handles turned inward.

Remember, if a grease fire starts, never use water. Turn off the heat, cover the pan with a lid if it’s safe to do so, and leave it covered.

Ride Smart, Charge Smart Safety Rodeo: TODAY!

Join the North Vancouver City Fire Department today from 11 AM–2 PM at The Shipyards Commons for a fun, hands-on day focused on fire, e-bike and battery safety.

Bring the family and stop by to:

• Learn practical bike and e-bike safety tips
• Learn how to charge batteries safely and help prevent fires
• Take part in interactive activities and a bike skills course
• Connect with local community safety partners: Shipyards Reckless Bike Shop, RCMP Community Policing, BCAA Evolve Bikes, HUB Cycling, North Shore Safety Council, NVCL Book Bike and our C.A.P.S. volunteers.

This week, our Fire Prevention Team visited local North Vancouver city schools to bring this year’s Fire Prevention Week message into the classroom.

We spent time with Grade 5, 6 and 7 students learning about safe charging and battery safety, including how to spot charging hazards, use chargers and batteries safely, recognize warning signs, and make safer choices with e-bikes, e-scooters and other battery-powered devices.

A big thank you to the students and teachers who welcomed our team into their classrooms and helped us charge into fire safety!

Lithium-ion batteries can show signs when something isn't right; it’s important not to ignore them.

If you notice a problem with your device or battery, stop using it and keep it away from anything that could catch fire, if it is safe to do so. Know the signs, stop using it and stay safe.

E-bikes and e-scooters are convenient ways to get around, but their larger batteries require safe charging.

When possible, charge e-bikes and e-scooters outside and always away from exits. Use the charger designed for your device, follow the manufacturer's instructions and stop using the battery if you notice signs of damage.

Know before you ride:

B.C. has age requirements for young riders:
• Light e-bike: 14+
• Standard e-bike: 16+
• E-scooter: 16+

Rules can vary depending on the type of device and where it's being ridden, so make sure you know the rules before you ride.

A charger that fits doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the right one.

When charging your devices, e-bikes or other battery-powered equipment, use the charger that came with the product or one approved by the manufacturer. Before you plug in, check your charger and cord for damage or fraying, and make sure you’re charging on a hard, flat surface.

Take a minute today to check the chargers you’re using at home.

This is a great activity to share with kids or family members to see if they can spot the hazards in the photo. Remember: Where and how you charge your devices matters. Keep charging areas clear and on a hard surface, use the right charger, and always follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Fire Prevention Week 2026 is here!

This year, the North Vancouver City Fire Department is Charging Into Fire Safety with a focus on battery and charging safety.

All week, we'll be sharing simple tips to help you spot the hazards, charge it right and know the warning signs, from everyday devices to e-bikes and scooters.

We'll also be taking our message into local schools and hosting a Battery & Bike Safety Rodeo at The Shipyards on Saturday, October 10. Stay tuned for more details!
