🌿 We're excited to share the news of a new Wellness Department at the Nation and we look forward to working together with the team to keep community safe.🌿

We want to share with Community a change in our People Services Division. Teams from Yúustway (Health) and Ayás Mén̓men (Child and Family Services) are being reorganized to better serve our People, resulting in a united department called Háhalhi7iwan (Wellness).

The focus of the new Wellness team is on Sḵwx̱wú7mesh People who are struggling with mental health and addictions, as well as those facing the greatest barriers to support.

Háhalhi7iwan will offer the following services:
▪️counselling and therapy
▪️land-based healing programs
▪️addictions and peer support
▪️mobile outreach work

Fisheries Closure

Effective immediately, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) is issuing a fisheries closure of the Capilano River for Squamish Nation fishing nightly from 7 pm to 7 am. This closure will remain in place for the remainder of the season.

In addition, there will be a full closure of the Capilano River starting at 7 pm (sunset) Tuesday October 13, re-opening at 7 am (sunrise) Friday October 16.

Squamish People and our Fish Guardian staff have observed sustained low water levels that are impacting fish moving up the river.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada is also issuing a similar temporary closure next week. We ask that these fisheries closures be respected. We expect to issue further Community updates on the fisheries next week.

🛶 Last week, the Public Safety Paddle Project wrapped up with a final canoe paddling session alongside the Ocean Canoe Family. This gathering brought together emergency managers, responders, and partners from across Sḵwx̱wú7mesh territory after more than a year of cultural learning and relationship building. Participants took the paddles they had carved and painted throughout the project onto the water, marking the culmination of their journey. This journey would not have been possible without the guidance and teachings of the Ocean Canoe Family, and the presence and participation of everyone who participated.🛶

On Skwáyel tl’a úlanch stl’pi’w̓en (Orange Shirt Day), our Public Safety team once again attended the Truth & Reconciliation march in downtown Squamish. This year's event included a formal apology from the District of Squamish to the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh People for generations of harmful policies and actions.

A Mixálh (black bear) was killed this morning by RCMP who were called to attend to an area near Lonsdale and First Avenue. Our Nation was notified so our Rights and Title team could take care of the bear in a good way and prepare any parts for cultural use. This aligns with our expectations for any external agencies dealing with wildlife. More black bears than usual have been roaming in Community this year, particularly at this time as they prepare for hibernation. Squamish Nation will continue to focus on co-existence with black bears, mitigating our own behaviours to not put bears at risk.

Bear Alert

During the past few days there has been several sightings of a black bear roaming in our Community, often seen near Chief Jimmy Harry Drive (Seymour). 🐻

The bear has been seen (and caught on camera) on the road and in yards. Our Community Safety Team is aware.

Please be aware of míx̱alh (black bear) and maintain a safe distance and remove fruit from trees if you are able as it is a big attractant.
