The South Norwich Historical Society is hiring a curatorial assistant (Canada Summer Jobs) for summer 2026! Start Date: Monday 1st June (training day at Annandale House NHS, Tillsonburg)
End Date: Saturday 8th August *note - we've extended the position since the last post!*
Rate: $17.60/hour, 35 hours a week. Will include weekend and occasional evening work. (please note that previous posts accidentally used last year's wage)
Location: Otterville Station Museum; Otterville Mill
The curatorial assistant's main responsibility will be to keep the Otterville Mill and Station Museum open and running through the summer months. This responsibility means ensuring that they, or an appropriate representative, are present at the museum during posted opening hours and that the museum is in a position to be open with functioning displays and information.
In addition to this, they will assist the South Norwich Historical Society with the day-to-day activities of the museum. These include leading guided tours for the public, organizing and managing events and programming for the summer, accepting and accessioning artifact donations to the museum, and keeping the museum's collections database up-to-date.
Other responsibilities include working with volunteers to ensure smooth running of the museum and events; assistance with communications, including social media; keeping records on museum visitors, volunteers, and tasks completed; researching and gathering information on artifacts in the museum collection for cataloguing; assisting with the creation of special displays and exhibits based on themes alongside the curator; maintaining displays and museum buildings with cleaning and light maintenance; promoting events and exhibits.
This will allow the curatorial assistant to: gain meaningful work experience in the heritage sector; discover the unique challenges of non-profit heritage resource management in a small community museum; enjoy networking opportunities through the Elgin-Oxford Network of Museum Professionals, Tourism Oxford, and local business organizations; hands-on experience with museum artifacts and displays.
