🚒 Celebrating 215 Years of Service!

On Saturday, August 29, 2026 the Township of Asphodel-Norwood Fire & Rescue held its Long Service Awards Presentation at Station 2, recognizing six firefighters for their remarkable dedication to the department and our community:

• Steve Graham – 45 years
• Dave Cardwell – 40 years
• Paul Cardwell – 40 years
• Andy Neilson – 40 years
• Bill Dornan – 25 years
• Rob Elmhurst – 25 years

Together, these individuals represent an incredible 215 years of service to the community!

Fire Chief Darryl Payne spoke about how fortunate the Township is to benefit from the recipients’ knowledge, leadership, dedication and many years of experience. He also reflected on how far the local fire service has come, recalling that the Township of Asphodel’s first fleet consisted of a 1966 pumper, a milk truck converted into a tanker and a cube van converted into a rescue vehicle.

Chief Payne thanked the recipients for their outstanding service and also recognized their families for the important support they have provided throughout the years.

Joining the celebration were MPP David Piccini; John Doucet, Fire Protection Advisor with Ontario’s Office of the Fire Marshal; Patrick Carter, Executive Assistant from MP Emma Harrison’s office; members of Council; and fellow ANFR firefighters.

Following the awards presentation, firefighters, families and guests gathered for a summer BBQ at Westwood Library Park.

On behalf of the Township, congratulations and thank you to to each recipient for your exceptional commitment and service to Asphodel-Norwood! 👏

The Township is aware of stronger-than-usual wastewater treatment odours around the community this year.

The increased odour is related to necessary repairs at the Norwood Wastewater Treatment Plant that required two tanks to be emptied and cleaned. Biosolids removed from the tanks are being temporarily stored in open digesters before being transferred to the biosolids storage tank.

The transfer process has been delayed because the pump used to mix the storage tank experienced a seal failure and is currently being repaired. The pump is expected to be returned within the next two weeks. Once it has been reinstalled, staff will resume transferring the material to the storage tank, which is expected to reduce the odour.

We recognize that the odour is unpleasant and apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
